More than 450 student-athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division I varsity sports at Appalachian State University. Appalachian has been a dominant force in the Southern Conference for more than 40 years.

Nearly half of Appalachian's student-athletes earn inclusion on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, which requires a 3.0 grade-point average or higher while completing at least 24 hours in two semesters.

University Recreation oversees all non-varsity sports activities on campus, including intramurals, club sports, outdoor programs, and fitness and informal recreation.
