Macbeth Act 5 Scene 5
1979 Trevor Nunn Vs. 2010 Rubert Goold
Rupert Goold vs Trevor Nunn
Rupert Goold and Trevor Nunn have very unique interpretations of Macbeth's Tomorrow speech. Both versions of the play gave exceptional portrayals of his speech. I believe Trevor gave an accurate version of the play because he remained true to the story because of his use of the traditional roots of Macbeth with his own unique elements.
The Similarities and Diffrences
Setting
The settings of the plays were worlds apart. Trevor envisioned a poorly lit armory with walls lined with words and armor, and Goold pictured a war-torn 20th century military base. One similarity between the two setings is that both directors chose to similate a historic time where a war was in progress.
Macbeth
Macbeth himself was portrayed as a tyrant in both movies. Trevor saw a Tyrant king with a cold heart. Rupert Gold pictured a military dictator who rules through fear and emotionless killing.
Mood
Trevor and Goold both emphasized the negative emotions that were plaguing Macbeth. In Trevor's version, Macbeth was filled with so much anger over his current situation that he cannot express is distress. Goold Stressed Macbeth's depression at the though of him losing his title as kinag and eventually his life.
