HMS Welcome Back Newsletter
2020-2021
Our "Virtual" First Day of School is on August 31st and starts at 9am!
Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!!
Welcome to our "Virtual Start" as we kick-off the 2020-2021 school year in a way that I can confidently say, is like nothing we've ever experienced before.
As we embark on this journey I am positive that by working together, extending grace and kindness to one another, and committing to doing our personal best we can thrive in any learning environment. This school year will present all of us with an opportunity for discovery, growth, and overcoming challenges.
Communication will play an essential role in our success this year. We will work to provide clear and timely updates to you. Please continue to follow our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter) and check your email for updates.
At this point, each grade level team will have sent their students one email to their HAS gmail account that has all of the links students will need to use to access their Google Meet each hour. Students will be following their schedules that are posted in Skyward and 1st hour starts at 9am. We look forward to connecting and learning together!
Thank you for viewing our Monthly Newsletter!! Go Bronchos!!

A Note from Mrs. Godoshian and Mr. Mattingly...
Dear HMS Families,
We have missed being able to work with our students and families in person, but we are excited about getting back to serving you in our virtual world very soon!
Virtual education comes with a learning curve for all of us, but we have no doubt that our HAS Community will grow and learn together. Our HMS Bronchos have shown great resilience and we will strive each day to help every student navigate through their academic, social, and emotional needs.
If you have any concerns about your student, please do not hesitate to reach out; we are here to help!

Student Handbook Highlights
Taking Care of Your District Provided Mobile Computing Device (MCD)
Students are responsible for the general care of the MCD they have been issued by the school.
MCD’s used for virtual learning that are broken or fail to work properly must be reported to the Oakland Schools Service Desk as soon as possible so that they can be taken care of properly.
General Precautions
No food or drink should be next to MCD’s.
Cords, cables, and removable storage devices must be inserted carefully into MCD’s.
Devices should not be used with the power cord plugged in when the cord may be a tripping hazard.
MCD’s must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, and labels.
Devices must be properly shut down daily to allow for updates and to prolong battery life.
Cords and cables should be unplugged before storing the device in a case or backpack.
MCD’s should arrive at school fully charged.
Carrying MCD’s
Always transport MCD’s with care. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action.
Never lift MCD’s by the screen.
Never carry MCD’s with the screen open.
Screen Care
The MCD screen can be damaged if subjected to heavy objects, rough treatment, some cleaning solvents, and other liquids. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure.
Do not put pressure on the top of a MCD when it is closed.
Do not store a MCD with the screen open.
Make sure there is nothing on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils, etc.).
Only clean the screen with a soft, dry microfiber cloth or anti-static cloth.
Asset Tags
All MCD’s will be labeled with a District asset tag.
Asset tags may not be modified or tampered with in any way.
Students may be charged up to the full replacement cost of a MCD for tampering with a District asset tag or turning in a MCD without a District asset tag.
Damage
Students (parents/guardians) are responsible for the damage, loss or theft of a district issued computing devices. The repair fees are set at the beginning of the school year based upon the actual repair costs provided to the district by an authorized repair facility.

Helpful Reminders as We Navigate our Virtual World
OUR HMS VIRTUAL AND IN PERSON AGREEMENTS
HMS Students Shows C.A.R.E.
At HMS, we will continue to promote civility and respect everywhere. Each week we'll be recognizing students who have demonstrated this throughout our virtual school day. We will be promoting kindness, courtesy in behavior and speech as well as positive regard for our virtual school community.
A Friendly Reminder from Mrs. Reister...
Update on Middle School Fall Athletics
At this point in time, middle school cross country has begun their practices and will continue as scheduled. Coach Gillespie would love to have anyone interested in running this fall, still join the program. Coach Gillespie can be contacted at ryan.gillespie@hask12.org if you are interested in joining the team. As for football and sideline cheer, the MHSAA has made the decision to move these two sports to the spring of 2021. We are uncertain on the specifics of this move but as soon as we have more information, it will be communicated on our website, Holly Athletics . Middle school girls' basketball is also on hold at this moment as the Governor's Executive Order 160 does not permit the use of indoor gyms or facilities. We are expecting more information on this in the coming days and will communicate that information via the website as well.
Setting up a Meeting with an HMS Staff Member
Please follow these steps if you are seeking to set up a virtual meeting (via Google Meet) with staff at HMS:
- Contact the person you are seeking a meeting with via email/phone (you can also reach out directly to your child's counselor).
- Set up a mutually agreed upon time.
- To mitigate risk, we seek to set virtual meetings vs. in person meetings at this time.
Thank you for your consideration.
Please continue to check back frequently to our HAS website for all the latest updates.
Information will continue to be communicated through email, Skylert, our website, and/or social media. We are committed to getting you information as quickly as possible and we will continue to make communication with our HAS families a priority.
If at any time you have questions or concerns please contact Mrs. Burgess at 248-328-3400 and we will be sure to connect you with the right staff member to assist you. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this new school year together.
