November 2022 Edition for Parents/Guardians

A Time for Giving Thanks!
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Entering this time of the year always stirs up the familiar: smells of pumpkin spice, cinnamon sticks and cloves; the anxiousness of shopping for loads of food for large family meals and upcoming holidays, as well as the tired feeling that comes from the time of the school year where there is no break from Labor Day to Thanksgiving Break. While anyone around a school community may feel this stress in some way each year, the start of November is also a poignant time where we like to stop and reflect on the incredible things that have taken place in such a short amount of time over the past 2 months.
In the month of September, every Husky worked hard to come together as a school community in what has been our most "back-to-normal" school year since fall 2018. Students in PreK began the first year of full day learning at Scarborough with an amazing crew of educators and aides that have developed a seamless bond of collaboration that is evident through their work together towards their students' growth! Students in K-5 took on the task of championing beginning of year assessments such as MAP Reading, MAP Math and/or Tx-KEA that helped to show their learning strengths and areas of need -- setting the stage for their learning journey this year. At this point, each and every teacher took on the challenge of setting goals for our students while working through their Collaborative Teams by analyzing beginning of year data which provided targeted learning experiences for all.
In October, all staff and Students started HOWL intervention time. This is such a unique experience on our campus because the phrase "ALL MEANS ALL" comes to life when ALL educators on campus (Administration, Discovery Teachers, Counselors, Librarian, GT Teacher, Classroom Teachers, etc.) are involved in teaching small groups in order to meet students' specific learning needs! We all work together to help OUR students reach their goals because we believe that working together is the best way to do this! Another amazing accomplishment that took place in the month of October was that students and families rallied together to raise over $74,000 dollars through our PTA Howl-A-Thon fundraiser! While this is an annual event, this was a first ever, record breaking amount raised! The things that can be done for students with these funds are endless. Your hard work and generosity is greatly appreciated.
In the moments where stress and the grind of the day-to-day get us in a zone, the accomplishments from the last two months, as well as the possibilities of the upcoming months, help our buckets to overflow! Our joy is here every day, in the faces of each student, family, and staff member that walks through the door. Scarborough Elementary is the place to be...and it's because of who is in it! Thanks to all of you for making that possible!
Respectfully,
Sandra Luna, Principal
Jenn Platt, Associate Principal
New changes to Arrival!7:00 AM is the earliest students can be dropped off on campus. Doors will be unlocked at this time, and students will be able to get breakfast. Up through 7:40 am, parents are allowed to walk their child to their designated arrival place (grade level hallway, cafeteria or gym). It is a "drop and go." This means we ask that parents take their children to their arrival spot, say goodbye, and leave the building unless you have official school and/or PTA business to attend to.
IF parents choose to go to the cafeteria to eat breakfast with their child, that is permitted. We have plenty of space to do so. However, once the child is done eating, students need to go to their arrival area and be in the classroom no later than 7:45 as to not be counted tardy. Learning begins promptly at 7:45 AM. The car line is always long between 7:30 and 7:45. If you are worried about tardies, please arrive earlier between 7:00 and 7:30! | What If I'm Late?REMINDER: Students entering the school between 7:45AM to 9AM are counted TARDY. Those who come to school after 9AM are considered ABSENT for the day per Texas state law. If a child arrives at 7:45 or after, parents must walk their child into the school building and check their child in at the front office. As we encourage students to get immediately to class, after 7:40, parents will not be allowed to walk the child past the front office to the classrooms. We need students to get to class as quickly as they can and be seated at 7:45 as instruction has begun. Staff will ensure children get to the classroom efficiently. | Time To Go Home! The school day ends at 3:00PM. Instruction takes place right up to dismissal, especially in the upper grades. Signing students out early causes them to miss quality instruction. In addition, it's a real safety concern as we have students in various areas of the school and we need to ensure everyone knows where that child is at dismissal. Only sign children out early for health appointments or emergencies please. Signing children out early is considered a partial day absence! This could become a truancy concern! Reminder: For safety reasons, NO CHANGES TO DISMISSAL OR EARLY OUTS AFTER 2:30pm. *Please do not get upset when you ask for your child to be pulled after 2:30pm and the front office ladies share the policy. If it's an emergency, please talk with administration. We'll look at each situation, case by case. If it becomes a pattern of early outs, our truancy officer will be asked to get involved. Thank you. |

Did you know missing 2 days a month equals...
Did you know that missing 2 days a month is equal to 4 weeks a year? This is over one year of lost learning from PreK through grade 12 for a student!! Missing school often results in lower grades, even failing grades for some, and each day missed makes it harder to catch up!
Research has shown missing school often tends to result in lower student achievement. Attendance matters!
As adults, it is our duty to ensure our children are at school. Please make it a priority to bring your child to school on time each and every day to ensure they get the best quality education possible. Our goal is to always maintain an average of 95% or higher as an entire campus for attendance. Thank you!
Year to Date Attendance = 93.19%
11/1/22 Attendance = 89.75% (EEKS!)
Be careful please! We have many students and parents, (and bikers), walking to and from school or to and from their parked cars. Please remember to always use the crosswalks/sidewalks for the safety of your children. If necessary to walk through the parking lot, please be careful and watch for cars. If driving on to campus, please be cognizant of your surroundings and watch your speed. | Speed is 10 MPH on campus! Please be sure you drive 10 mph upon turning into the campus drive up lanes. Once you are on campus, the speed is 10mph! This is almost a crawl as we do it every day. Since we have many walkers, it's important to follow the speed limit. We've added an additional sign and plan to add one or two more. Please abide by the speed limit signs upon entering campus grounds. Thanks! | Avoid the Fire Lanes Being a neighborhood school, our parking lot fills up fast! We realize this and are attempting to help cars find spots as others leave in the afternoons at dismissal. To help with congestion in the parking lot, and for safety reasons should an emergency arise, we request that you avoid parking next to the fire lane curbs (marked in red). This may help you avoid a ticket in the future should NISD PD be on campus. :) If in the car pick up line, you must remain in your vehicle please. Again, if an emergency arises, we need to move cars quickly from this area. We appreciate your support! |

Community Parking
We have had several parents request that we send out a reminder to avoid parking in front of driveways and/or vehicles when you park and walk your kiddos into school. Thank you!
