It’s allergy season!
As we move into the spring and the nice weather is upon us we start to see the hue of yellow over our cars. Welcome pollen! Thousands of individuals have seasonal allergies. They are allergic to things such as grass, trees, and weed pollen. During the spring they bloom and spread pollen through the air, leaving us humans with symptoms that are just unbearable at times.
What are the symptoms of allergies? Symptoms vary from individual to individual just as what you are allergic to differs. Most common symptoms include running nose, watery eyes, sneezing, itchy throat and eyes coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and fatigue. Allergies will make you feel like you have a cold and just miserable.
How can you prevent or curtail allergy symptoms? If you want to know what you are allergic to, you can see an allergist who can run tests to determine your specific allergy. The allergist can prescribe immunotherapy that will help you build a resistance to the allergen. If you don’t want to seek an allergist you can take over the counter allergy medication with the recommendation of your physician. It is best to start the allergy medication weeks before the pollens arrive. For example, if you know that your symptoms are worse in the spring start taking your medication several weeks before spring arrives. Pre-treatment is always the best. The symptoms are harder to control if you wait until your allergens are present.
Everyone waits all winter for the beautiful weather to get outside and enjoy it. So know your triggers, pay attention to the weather, and pre-treat your allergy symptoms.
Hearing & Speech
Hearing and speech are essential tools to allow us to be successful in our lives through communication. Without communication skills we as humans find ourselves in a lonely and frustrating world. Speech, Language and hearing issues can be found in all age groups. These disorders are treatable if diagnosed at an early age. Prior to entering school a child should be able to talk, listen and understand. These core skills are the base for spelling, reading, writing, following directions and remembering. These core skills are necessary for your child to be successful throughout their school years. If you think or have any concerns speak with your family pediatrician because early treatment is the key to your child’s success. Any child who qualifies is entitled to services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
A childhood hearing and/or speech disorder is usually accommodated for prior to becoming an adult. But many medical conditions and/or injuries can cause hearing and/or speech loss as an adult. These skills become a part of our everyday life. It is a frustrating experience to lose these skills as an adult. Losing your ability to communicate as an adult can lead to disorientation and depression. Work with your physician and know that there are specialists that may be able to help such as a speech-language pathologist and/ or an audiologist.

Matawan-Aberdeen Educational Foundation
Greetings to all! As the year winds down, the Educational Foundation would like to share a few more grants with you and let you know that we are planning some fun events for the fall. Please friend us on Facebook or come look for our table at Back to School Night in the new school year. Thank you everyone for all your continued support!
The two grant highlights this month are science based. These three teachers continue to raise the bar and the students are having a blast learning! We hope you enjoy reading about it as much as the kids did learning about it.
Earth Box STEM Garden Kit - Ms. Jacqueline Bliss
As part of our life skills component to the LLD program, each year the students learn to grow and tend to plants in our greenhouse outside. As the temperature gets warmer, we found that is was difficult to keep up with watering the plants over weekends and long breaks. The Earthbox was designed to allow the students to see growth of a seed using a self watering system. Unlike watering the top of the plant, the Earthbox has an area on the bottom where the plants receive their water through an added pipe. The students just check the water level daily to make sure the plant is receiving what it needs. This was a great addition to the classroom and allowed us to start our planting earlier in the year since we had this box set-up. We even took advantage of having a guest farmer come and teach the students how to properly plant the seeds. The students really enjoy the process of planting and admiring the results of their hard work.
Physics and Philm - Mr. Craig Burfeindt and Dr. Daniel Kaplan
Our joint grant has given us the opportunity to facilitate an interdisciplinary approach between Physics and the Digital Media, Film and Broadcasting programs. With the help of the Matawan Aberdeen Educational Foundation, we have been able to obtain a drone that dynamically enhances videos and provides informative and exciting physics demonstrations.
We decided to divide the work. The Physics Club would take on the initial activity to learn to safely fly the drone and the Film and TV Club would work on initial demonstration videos, utilizing the capability of the drone.
The Physics Club took on the challenge of learning to safely navigate the drone. The drone comes with software that allows developing pilots to learn how to fly a simulated drone. However, this software requires a fairly high-end PC to run. We did not initially have a PC with the required capabilities to allow us to run this software. We were then assisted by the IT department. They built us a computer that had the horsepower required for us to run the software, and worked with us to correctly install the software. After many hours of obtaining the right version of the software, and installing it for our environment, we were finally able to start practicing.
As of last week, we had four trained student pilots. We took our first test flight from one of the baseball fields, with students from both the Physics Club and the Film and TV Club participating. We look forward to sharing this experience through the production of a video presentation, that describes the entire process, and will provide a breathtaking perspective through the lens of the drone.
We are excited to move forward and begin using this new technology to enhance both instruction and educational objectives.
