What Happened at our December Meeting
Our plan for the December PTSA meeting was to limit the business part of our agenda and take some time to build community, and hear your thoughts, questions, ideas and concerns in a discussion format.
Shortly before our meeting, the Portland teacher's union had released a statement related to the challenges Portland Public Schools is facing due to the impact of the pandemic in schools.
Director Michelle DePass and Principal Allen were in attendance in addition the board and several members. The topic of the current needs of our teachers and students spurred on a meaningful discussion centering black and brown students. Details of the discussion are in our meeting minutes. We appreciate everyone's participation and contributions.

End of Year Giving Campaign Results
In December of 2020, we held our first end of year giving campaign. We raised over $700. This December, we raised $935! We can't thank you enough! And it couldn't have come at a better time. We were just notified that event concessions have been suspended due to heightened Covid protocols. The money we make from concessions, is the single greatest funding source for the PTSA.
If you meant to donate in December, it's not too late! Help us to be able to continue funding teacher/student group grants, the PTSA food pantry, senior celebration and teacher appreciation. Any amount is appreciated.
Your thoughtfulness and generosity is greatly appreciated!
Airway Science for Kids at our JANUARY MEETING
Yolanda Frazier, ASK's Community Outreach Director will be the guest speaker
at our January meeting. Don't miss her!
From ASK, Inc. website, https://www.airsci.org:
Airway Science for Kids, Inc. or ASK is a nonprofit with a mission to remove barriers for children and youth who have been systematically excluded from STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) education and careers. ASK was founded by Bob Strickland, who was a leader in Portland's African American community and saw aeronautics as a tool to capture the imaginations of youth and engage them in unique opportunities to learn STEAM through the world of flight.
It has been revamped in recent years and is worth checking out! ASK offers programs for elementary, middle and high school students. All programs are free and best of all, ASK is right in our backyard! It is located on N. Mississippi Avenue. Their Friday Open Houses are a great way to see what they do.
Here is a link to register for any Friday:
Senior Celebration Planning
Even though graduation is a long way off, we are beginning to plan for the PTSA sponsored Senior Celebration. There is a lot that goes into the event and early planning is very important.
If you think you might be interested in helping out or just want more information, please email Laura at email@example.com
Jefferson Staff Appreciation
If you have any ideas for future staff appreciation, consider participating in our staff appreciation committee. Email firstname.lastname@example.org
It's never too late to join or renew!
All Jefferson community members are invited to become PTSA members! That includes: parents, care givers, students, teachers, staff, alumni and community members.
Standard membership dues are $12.50. This year, we have also set up a sliding scale membership where you have the option to pay $5.00 or a custom payment of your choice, lower or higher than our standard membership. You will see two options, the standard and the sliding scale on our website.

LOOKING FOR STUDENT OFFICERS
Your voice is important to us! What can we do to impact your time at Jefferson in a positive way?
There are four open positions for student board members.
if you are interested.
JEFFERSON BASKETBALL GAMES
We are looking for ticket takers for basketball games, starting in January.
CONCESSIONS (temporarily suspended due to heightened Covid protocols)
Selling snacks and beverages during home sporting events. During Covid, everything is prepackaged, no food prep right now. Another fun opportunity!
CROWD MANAGEMENT SERVICES
CMS are the folks who we have done volunteer security for Edgefield concerts. They have reached out and invited us to volunteer at concerts and other events. When one of our community members volunteers, they give the PTSA money. I am working on getting clarity about the rate this year, but it is very generous. The work is light security and an opportunity to watch the game, concert or performance. We will send out communications as these opportunities come up. Volunteers can be 17 years old and up.
Every Friday. There is set up, distributing and clean up. The time range is 11:00-3:00 or so. We could use help for all or part of this block of time. This is a very rewarding volunteer opportunity.
There are lots of volunteer opportunities, big and small, within our committees. Chair or be a member of one of our committees:
Manage Facebook page, posting info and events throughout the year.
Edit, contribute, manage, and/or collaborate on PTSA monthly newsletter. We are using the platform Smore currently, to create our newsletter.
JEFFERSON SAFETY COMMITTEE
We are looking for a parent representative for the monthly safety meetings that are held at Jefferson and led by Vice Principal Gregory.
If you are interested or want more information, let us know at a PTSA meeting or email
