From the Desk of the Principal
TONIGHT is our PTA Annual Fall Festival! RAIN or SHINE, we hope you can come join us this evening, Friday, October 13 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Wristbands can be purchased at the door for $15 and can be paid for by cash or check. This Lisbon tradition is in its 20th year and is one of our exciting and fun events! Please join us for games, food and fun!
As the weather begins turning seasonally cool, we wanted to take a moment to remind each family to check the weather forecast daily to assist in selecting clothes for school. Keep in mind that between time spent at the bus stop and recess, students may spend up to 45 minutes outside each day. Please assure your child/children wear the proper temperature and precipitation appropriate clothing each day.
On Tuesday, October 31, 2017, Lisbon ES will celebrate Halloween. Our annual costume parade around the school (outside weather permitting) will be held at 2:00 p.m. this year. However due to logistical concerns, only room parents and designated volunteers assisting with the parties may come into the classrooms.
This self-paced Canvas 101 guide has been designed to ensure that you are receiving all school to home communications in a timely manner. Please review the information at the link below as needed.
Once you have completed the steps in the guide, you may find that you still need assistance. If you need further assistance, you are welcome to attend an informal Parent/Guardian Canvas 101 Night on Tuesday November 2nd from 6:00-7:00 PM.
IMPORTANT POLICY INFORMATION: A Student/Parent Handbook 2016-2017 was sent home to every family the first day of school with important policies for parents and student to become familiar with. We would like to communicate some of these policies
Safe and Supportive Schools (Policy 1040)
The Board of Education is committed to providing a safe, engaging and supportive school climate. Behaviors that compromise this commitment, interfere with school operations, or are otherwise contrary to the basic mission of public schools will not be tolerated.
Any behaviors that interfere with or threaten the physical, emotional, mental or academic well-being of students or employees will be addressed through the application of the appropriate Board policy and the HCPSS Student Code of Conduct, even when they do not occur on school property or at a school-related activity.
Students, employees and third parties engaging in these behaviors are subject to disciplinary and/or legal action. Students who violate this policy may also be subject to appropriate educational interventions and/or counseling.
Discrimination (Policy 1010)
The Board is committed to providing an educational and work environment that is free from discrimination, fosters equitable opportunities, and values diversity and commonality. To that end, the Board prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, religion, physical or mental disability, age, gender, marital status, or sexual orientation in its educational program, including co‑curricular and extra-curricular activities, and in the workplace.
Furthermore, the Board recognizes its responsibility to promote the worth and dignity of all individuals through curriculum, instruction, professional development, and resource selection. Employees and third parties share responsibility for the health, safety, and general welfare of students and for contributing to an environment free from discrimination.
It is a violation of this policy for any student, employee, or third party to engage in acts of discrimination in schools, school system offices, or at school-related activities. It is a violation of this policy to engage in retaliation with regard to allegations of discrimination. Violations of this policy are cumulative; subsequent offenses may affect the nature and severity of the consequences.
Grading and Reporting (Policies 8010 and 8020)
The Board of Education is committed to ensuring that all students meet or exceed rigorous performance standards. Accordingly, grading and achievement information must be determined in a consistent manner and regularly reported to students and their parents. Grading and promotion within the school system is based on the degree of success the individual student has achieved in the educational program. Decisions regarding promotion, retention and acceleration are made based on a student’s performance and academic progress over the entire school year.
The grading system for kindergarten through Grade 8 includes evaluation, effort, and instructional codes and/or comments. When the performance of any K–8 student is below grade level, the teacher, with appropriate participation of parents, will develop strategies and apply appropriate interventions to assist the student.
The decision to retain or accelerate a student is based on a number of factors, which are listed in the policy.
An elementary student who is not performing on grade level in reading and mathematics will automatically be considered for retention.

Halloween Celebration - October 31, 2017
Our annual Halloween Costume Parade will take place on Tuesday, October 31, 2017. The parade around the school (outside weather permitting) will begin at 2:00. Please review the following reminders/updates.
· Avoid any costumes that perpetuate violence, have any blood, gore, scary masks, or contain any type of weapons. Props that come with costumes that are “play weapons” are not allowed in school. This includes but is not limited to toy guns, knives, swords, sickles, pitchforks, etc.
· If you prefer that your child does not take part in the parade, please send a note to your child’s teacher or contact Mrs. Anoff atdebra_anoff@hcpss.org.
· Visitors are welcome to watch the parade outside and gather in the front of the building! Staff members will be available to help guide all visitors. However, due to logistical concerns, ONLY room parents and designated volunteers assisting with the parties will be permitted into classrooms. We ask that all other visitors remain outside of the building to enjoy the parade. Thank you for your cooperation.
