Sycamore Heroes Walk-A-Thon
In your child's book bag yesterday there should be a packet detailing our major School Fundraiser for the year. We are excited to get our kids ready for this event and need your help. We need sponsors for our t-shirts and prizes. This important fundraiser will help us to raise money for school recognition efforts for our students, school technology needs, environmental resources and playground equipment. Please help us to find donors and supporters in the community who would be willing to donate to our school in this special way. We raised only $7500 last year and I know that we can double that this year with your support. All monies raised will go toward these special projects. Letters for tax purposes will be offered as well. You can donate on My PaymentsPlus under the category-School Fundraisers, send checks payable to Sycamore Elementary School or send cash. Official envelopes will be sent home very soon!
Parent/Teacher Conference Announcements
Dear Sycamore Parents,
We are looking forward to spring early release conferences on Wednesday, February 22 and Thursday, February 23, 2017. Teachers are excited to share your child’s progress with you. If you have not scheduled a conference with them, please use the web address for our online scheduling service.
All teachers are using PTCFast, so you can schedule your children’s conferences on the same day, if you have multiple children at Sycamore. However, conference times will fill up quickly, so you will need to schedule your conference as soon as you can, to make sure you have plenty of options for conference times.
To pick a time slot click or enter this link http://bit.ly/sesconf1 in your internet browser’s URL window.
Please do not hesitate to contact your teacher if you have any questions.
We sincerely hope you will be able to attend.
We need your input! (Parent Portal Survey)
Please take a moment to go to the Parent Portal and take our Parent Survey for our district perception surveys. We only have 18 completed and we need many more. It should take you less than 5 minutes and your feedback is appreciated.
Summer Camps- Lanier High School
For parents looking for summer camps for students, Lanier High School has a growing list, starting with some fun STEM/Tech camps. STEM Camps are going to be offered by our CDAT teachers and students, you can see more information about them at http://stemcamps.lanierhs.org These camps are supervised by Lanier High teachers, and run by the students as the main fundraiser for their clubs!!
More camps will be listed on our Community School website as they become available at http://lcs.lanierhs.org/home/forms
Academically Speaking...
With just under four months left of the school year, we want to press upon the need for students to continue working hard to master the AKS curriculum. Please make sure that your child is reading, practicing critical thinking skills and completing their homework. Our teachers are working extremely hard to assure that your child is learning and growing and your support at home is always appreciated. Additionally, our class eCLASS pages are a resource for you to get a glimpse of what is happening in the classrooms. Please continue to reach out to us should you need ideas, support, and resources to support your child's learning.
STEM Certification is on its way!
We were visited by our district team to see our process for getting STEM certified. We will pursue this in the Fall and just need a little more work internally to be prepared. One area we need support in is in mentors for STEM like activities. Are you an engineer, computer programmer, and/or working in a career that manufactures items for daily use? We could use you! Our students need to be in touch with experts in the field of STEM to get advice, modeling, and ideas from on their projects. Please email Mrs. Thompson at crystal_cooper_thompson@gwinnett.k12.ga.us to inform me of your willingness. Let's make Sycamore a place where students are given ample opportunities to soar!
Georgia Milestones-Grades 3-5:
In April, all Georgia students in grades 3-5 will engage in a yearly test that helps schools monitor grade level learning and growth toward state standards. This test this year, will entirely be taken online as opposed to paper and pencil. Students will partake in a test related to language arts, math, science and social studies. We have continued to implement practical strategies with our students all year and will continue to embed practice into the normal curriculum so that it is engaging, rigorous and supportive. This test is a promotion requirement and more information will be offered throughout the school year. Please join us in February during conferences where we will offer four sessions that will give you more information about how this important test works.
