The Cold War Leads to Vietnam

The Anti-Communism tensions and fears of the Cold War caused the Americans to be worried about the fall of Vietnam. Domino Theory stated that the fall of one country to communism would gradually influence other countries to also fall to communism causing America to eventually become communist.

Ngo Dinh Diem led South Vietnam

  • Supported by US-anti-communism

  • Declared President of the Republic of Vietnam on Oct. 26, 1956

  • Not supported by the public due to his religion and social class was assasinated

Ho Chi Minh led North Vietnam

  • Pro-communism
  • Led the nationalist movement wanting to overthrow the French
  • This caused the U.S. to send “resources” to Vietnam to preserve U.S.interests

Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO)

  • In September of 1954, the United States, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Thailand and Pakistan formed the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, or SEATO.

Tet Offensive: Considered the turning point of the war

  • Tet Offensive: Considered the turning point of the war
  • Vietcong attacked the US embassy in Saigon
  • US was successful in holding off the enemy, but lost a lot of support in America→ Film footage was shown on the news, showing the violence and destruction. Also, the event revealed that the end of the war was not in sight, despite the US government saying it was.

- Patrol boats sent to Vietnam to help with the idea of containment

-USS Maddox sent to collect intelligence of recent attacks in Tonkin Gulf

- North Vietnam sent Soviet built boats to attack the USS Maddox

- USS Maddox called in air support and destroyed the 3 boats

- Proved that missions like the Maddox’s were still necessary
