Take Responsibility, Always Growing, Better Together
Nov. 18, 2022
A message from me...
Good Afternoon!
Last week I shared a little about my dad and his service in the military. This week I wanted to share a little more about my dad and how my relationship with him has shaped who I am as a father, husband, principal. The story is not necessarily one that would be a "Hallmark movie" but as Thanksgiving approaches, I want to express my gratitude for the life experience that has given many more gifts than sadness.
My dad, Dave, passed away 4 years ago this week in my first year as Principal of Jerome. He was in an auto accident and the cause is still undetermined. When I found out I was shocked by the cause of his death but not that he had died. My dad was an alcoholic and struggled throughout my life as an addict. I had come to terms that someday his addiction was going to be fatal. It didn't make it easier but it was something I had be preparing for.
Just because my dad was an addict did not mean he didn't love us. He was a hardworking, blue-collar guy that everyone liked. But between working 70-80 hours a week and his drinking, he missed out so many opportunities to connect and maintain relationships, especially with my mom, sister, and me.
Thankfully, I had a great support system of family, friends, and teachers that helped me navigate the times when I/we struggled. However, as I have grown older with my own kids, I recognize the sizable gap missing in my life without him.
The experience with my dad has made me acutely aware of the need for connection with my kids, my wife and others I care for. I am by no means infallible but this is a part of who I am. It has made me a better and I am so grateful to everyone for allowing me to grow and evolve.
Secondly, this experience has made me a better educator and principal. Our students, staff, and community require meaningful connections and relationships to be successful. These connections and relationships allow us to celebrate during the good times but also sustain us during the bad times. It fosters resilience and improvement. The work to strengthen our interpersonal experience at Jerome is extremely important to me each and every day.
It will not be perfect with this but we will strive to get better each day. I love my job because of the opportunity to meet, interact and learn with so many wonderful people each day. I am better because of my experiences in my life. I am grateful to my dad for doing the best he could. I love and miss him every day.
Thanks for taking the time to read. Over the next week or so take a moment to express your gratitude to someone. It will be worth it.
Have an amazing weekend!
Better Together,
Mike
