February is Black History Month
Once again, art teacher and advisor Ms. Jarasisits, along with the Cultural Exploration Club, created an amazing Black History Month display in our main lobby for all to see. (above photo)
Ms. Eckhart and staff created a wonderful display in the Learning Commons. The display contains posters and a wide selection of print materials available to students that feature some of the many, many important figures who have made valuable contributions to US history. (see smaller photos and captions below)
The OMS Knightly News team will be featuring one Black History Month figure each day in February.
During the recent celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. held at Stoughton High School, our Project 351 Ambassador nominees were recognized. Project 351's goal is to create "one statewide community united by young leaders committed to kindness, inclusion, and social justice." This year's Ambassador is 8th grader Nikko Ortiz. Not only recognized as Stoughton's Ambassador at the ceremony, Nikko, a talented artist, created original works of art for display at the town-wide celebration. Included in the collection was an original and amazing portrait of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (see the big photo below)

Sharing is not always caring when it involves the flu
While we hope everyone will avoid getting sick this winter season and stay well, cold and flu season is upon us. Since sharing is not caring when it comes to the flu, we would like to pass along some helpful flu prevention tips. Common symptoms of the flu are fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. Prevention tips include receiving the flu vaccine, recommended by the CDC and the Department of Public Health, for individuals 6 months or older. Along with the flu vaccine, other ways to prevent contracting the flu include frequent hand washing, coughing and sneezing etiquette, avoiding contact with sick individuals, and cleaning commonly touched surfaces like door knobs, phones, and remote controls. If you believe that you or a family member has the flu please contact your doctor's office as they may recommend you be tested for the flu. For more information please see the link below.
When Should I Keep My Child Home?
If you are wondering about sending your children to school after they tell you they don’t feel well, please consider using these guidelines to help you make your decision.
- A temperature over 100°F (Please remember that Tylenol, Advil, etc. can mask the effects of a fever). It is preferable that your child be fever-free and Tylenol/Advil free for 24 hours before returning to school.
- Persistent vomiting and/or diarrhea
- A severe cold with fever, sneezing, and thickened nasal discharge
- A cough that keeps a child awake at night, worsens with increased activity, or is combined with other symptoms
- A persistent red, sore throat, especially if the tonsils are enlarged
- A severe and persistent earache
- Redness in the whites of the eyes, yellow discharge and matted lashes are symptoms of conjunctivitis (pinkeye). A doctor should be consulted, as this may be highly contagious.
- Rashes can be difficult to evaluate. If they are all over the body, blistery, oozing, or painful, they could be a sign of a contagious infection. Please check with your school nurse or your doctor before you send your child to school.
REMEMBER: These are suggested guidelines. If you are unsure whether to send your child to school, please call your physician or your school nurse. If you are keeping your child home from school, please call and notify your school nurse on the day of absence.
POWERSCHOOL PARENT PORTAL INFORMATION WORKSHOP
Important opportunity for all Stoughton Public School Parents
Do you need help understanding what the Powerschool Parent Portal is, why it is important to use, and how to use it? Dianne Dolan, from our IT department, will help parents gain access to the Powerschool Parent Portal and learn how to use it to view report cards and schedule conferences with their teachers. This workshop is a repeat of the one we did at the New England Community Center in November.
Portuguese and Haitian Creole and Spanish translators will be there to help.

February Break
February break will be from February 17th through February 21st. Over the break, the OMS office will be open Tuesday through Friday from 8am until 3pm. We want to wish everyone a restful and relaxing break. School re-opens for students on Monday, February 24th.
The Saddest Place in School...
...the lost and found. We have three full bins of unclaimed items in the cafetorium. Please take a look at the lost and found soon to claim any of your items that might be in there. We will be donating unclaimed items to charity of the February break.
Thank you...
...to all those involved in the morning drop off for being patient and cooperative adjusting to the new system.
A reminder that those vehicles traveling from the Adams Street side with the school sign and building on your right are able to drop off on the curb on the school side of Cushing Street. Students dropped there walk right to the walkway and crosswalks to the student entrance. Many folks traveling that way have started to utilize that curb as a way to avoid the lot and drop off quickly.
Please do not use the upper parking lot where SHS students park for drop off or pick up.
