Culture of Dignity: Lesson 4

The Power of Gossip

Objective:

Define gossip, venting, and stereotype. Understand why gossip "sticks" to some more than others. Demonstrate how it affects one's decision making and behavior. Challenge the belief someone's embarrassment is acceptable entertainment.

What it means by "sticks" to some more than others: Gossip reinforced as believable because of stereotypes or social vulnerability (race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, gender expression).

Ask your student: How can you handle different gossip situations? Do you feel it is okay to have the the feelings you have, and know you can't control your immediate emotional response? Do you believe you have the right to share important experiences, but those you share it with don't need to share that information?

Challenge Yourself: Choose something you want to change about your behavior and then hold yourself accountable.

Students & Parents: Please be sure you/your student does not have any unfulfilled obligations. It's not nagging, really. It is a gentle reminder to avoid unnecessary surprises.

Possible obligations: laptop insurance, bills carried over from last year, lunch bill, lost books or other borrowed items, FCCLA fees, club dues, athletic dues. Your understanding is appreciated.
