4th Grade Battle of the Books
Let the Battle Begin! This year’s Battle of the Books was held on Thursday, May 12 in the school cafeteria. The 24 students read 16 award winning books of various genres and authors. The battle was fought long and hard, and the winner of this year’s Battle of the Books was Mrs. McKeown’s class. Congratulations to these four students: Karina Valencia, Shahan Lalani, Insia Mahmed, and Asna Thayani. These students advanced to the District battle on May 23 at Wetmore Elementary School.
NEISD Battle of the Books
On Monday, May 23 Roan Forest students competed in the ninth annual NEISD Battle of the Books. The competition was held at Wetmore Elementary school with thirty nine schools participating. The competition was fierce and after the first round, Roan Forest was declared one of the schools to participate in the Finals competition. The Final round was held at 7:30 with Roan Forest competing against Tuscany Heights, Castle Hills, Royal Ridge, Cibolo Green and Thousand Oaks. After a nail-biting round, Roan Forest was declared the winner of the 2016 NEISD Battle of the Books. The Roan Forest team included Karina Valencia, Asna Thayani, Insia Mahmed and Shahan Lalani.
We are all very proud of these students for the hard work that they put forth, for their outstanding leadership skills and competitive spirit. We hope that this is just the first of many more District Battle of the Books wins! We ARE the Champions!
3rd Grade Battle of the Books
Roan Forest held their second annual Third Grade Battle of the Books on Wednesday, May 25. It was an exciting reading event! The third graders have been reading (and rereading) 10 outstanding chapter books since January. Many kept a journal to record important details from the books. The class teams were formed using results from a qualifying test given in May after the STAAR tests. During the battle, teams answered questions about the books in order accrue points. The questions were statements or quotes from each book. During the Author Speed Round, students would buzz in after hearing clue words. Most of the time they gave the correct answer after hearing just one or two words. The team with the most points at the end was declared the winner. The winner of the Third Grade Battle was Mrs. Blackburn’s class. Her team included Lorenzo Dominguez, Adeyemi Dosunmu, and Shifa Panjwani.
