RRHS Drama Department Presents...
HOSA Efforts in the Community
Parkinson’s is a progressive disease involving the nerve system. It can be treated with medication, but unfortunately has no cure. The students of RRHS HOSA have been determined to change that fact and during the months of December and January the HOSA members helped to create awareness for the event “Purses for Parkinson's”. The organizer was Jolene Dunphy, a former GFPS nurse and Parkinson’s sufferer herself. “Purses for Parkinson’s” was held Thursday, January 10th and Friday, January 11th. It was a HUGE success and very rewarding to the students who devoted much of their time hanging flyers, collecting purses and spreading awareness through local media channels, including the HOSA President Chloe Rowekamp appearing on “ND Today”, All proceeds from this event went to the Michael J Fox Parkinson’s Foundation and the GF YMCA Parkinson’s Program. Additionally on the HOSA agenda this month, the members are beginning preparation for their state competition which will be held in March.
Once again Grand Forks has the honor of hosting Japanese visitors. In October a group of Japanese middle school students will come for a 10 day visit. Over the next few months we will be looking for host families. If you are interested or would like more information please visit our website. You will find us listed under activities on the Red River High School webpage. Applications will be available in March.
Thank you from the exchange coordinator,

District Message:
Kids are less likely to use alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs if their parents have established a pattern of setting clear rules and consequences for breaking those rules. This applies to no-use rules about tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs — as well as bedtimes and homework. Have clear expectations for behavior, monitor your child, and implement appropriate consequences. In setting these rules, be sure you discuss your rules and expectations in advance and follow through with the consequences you’ve set.
Don’t forget to acknowledge times when your child follows the rules! Parents who have a warm relationship with their children while maintaining rules for behavior are teaching their children self-discipline. Parents who have rules that are too harsh or no rules at all are more likely to have children who are at greater risk for drug-taking behavior.
If you use tobacco or alcohol, be mindful of the message you are sending to your children. We may unknowingly be relaying a message that we don't want. Avoid giving your child sips of alcohol, asking them to grab you a beer from the fridge, taking your child with you into a bar or liquor store, or asking them to pass your cigarettes. By avoiding these behaviors, you reinforce your message that alcohol and tobacco are not for children and they are dangerous for growing bodies.
