Companionship and Friendship

By Sean Herrington

Throughout the book Mary Shelley uses quotes that supply the theme of Friendship and Companionship. Here are just a few I found that I thought were the most interesting or useful to me.

Quote 1

1. "Have my murderous machinations deprived you also my dearest Henry of life? Two I have already destroyed; other victims awaiting their destiny; but you, Clerval, my friend, my benefactor----" 155.

This fits into today's society because everyday someone kills another person and it might even be a friend and it haunts them for the rest of their life.

Quote 2

2. "Shall each man," cried he, "find a wife for his bosom, and each beast have his mate, and I be alone? I had feelings of affection, and they were requited by detestation and scorn. pg. 146.

This fits into today's society because some find their love in life and are happy and some people never do. So the people that do find them should harness them and make the most out of it.

Quote 3

3. Know that one by one my friends were snatched away; I was left desolate. pg. 175

This fits into today's society because as you make new friends you sometimes lose your old ones and you should try to keep as many friends as you can so it doesn't leave you desolate at the end of the day.

Quote 4

4. "I have no friend, Margaret: when I am glowing with the enthusiasm of success, there will be none to participate my joy; if I am assailed by disappointment, no one will endeavor to sustain me in dejection." Letter 2, pg. 4

This fits into today' society because If you have no friends then you will not be joy in your life and you will not only be disappointed in yourself but in humanity.

Quote 5

I am alone and miserable: man will not associate with me; but one as deformed and horrible as myself would not deny herself to me. My companion must be of the same species and have the same defects. This being you must create.

This fits into today's society because if you don't find a companion in life and are always alone with no friends then you will always be miserable with no one to talk to about your feelings and to have fun with.

Quote 6

The fallen angel becomes the malignant devil. Yet even the enemy of God and man had friends and associates in his desolation; I am alone.

This fits into today's society because some friends are good and stay friends for forever and are loyal and some friends are bad and these are the friends that when they make new friends, forget about you and ruin the friendship. But sometimes you don't need friends for a while and need some down time to yourself.
