Rattler News
Newsletter for the January 23rd, 2022
Message from Mrs. Chavira, Campus Principal
Rattler Community,
We are excited to start Week 4 of the third marking period. This past week we had so many great things happening at The Ranch. We began our afterschool Rattler Round-up sessions and we will continue them every Tuesday and Thursday through the end of February. We also had our first Saturday Camp session to help provide TARGETED support to our students. We will have a second session this upcoming week. These sessions are filled with fun activities that support student learning. These sessions are by invitation only. We
Thank you for your support.
This week we also had a visit by author John Shu for our 3rd through 5th grade. Mr. Shu shared a message of having a love for reading to experience new worlds and stories. Our students in 5th grade received autographed books of The one and Only Ivan. Students in 3rd through 4th grade will also receive a free book written by Mr. Shu, 'This is school', as soon as they arrive.
This week we are KICKING OFF our part in the National Great Kindness Challenge week! This year our Student Council is spearheading our Kindness Challenge initiative.
Last month we were visited by the Pink Socks Tribe to reignite our Kindness Efforts as part of the Pink Socks Tribe. This week our STUCO members will begin a donation campaign to collect funds to purchase PINK SOCKS and donate them to the students from Rob Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. Our STUCO sponsor Mrs. Duarte and STUCO Leadership members are spearheading this drive. Please take a moment to see the information below. and how you can contribute.

KINDNESS CHALLANGE WEEK
This week we are ready to begin our journey to pay it forward and bring new members to this great organization brought to Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary by former Educator Zelene Blancas. Student Council Members will be starting a drive to collect funds to purchase socks from the Non-Profit Organization Pink Socks Life Tribe. Students are asked to complete chores or consider them as a family donations. If each DSSE family is able to donate $5, we can purchase enough socks for one or two schools. STUCO's goal is to purchase 485 socks at $5 each to gift to Rob Elementary in Uvalde Texas. Any extra funds will be used to purchase additional socks for a local SISD Campus. Help our students make a difference by inspiring others to BE KIND.
To read more about this great organization and how it made an impact at Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary, you can read the full story at PinkSocksTribe.
To donate to this great cause, please communicate with your child's teacher and send your donation. Each child that donates will have their name placed on a PINK Sock to post on campus.
PINK SOCKS TRIBE INFORMATION
Pinksocks Life, Inc. is a worldwide non-profit charitable organization focused on promoting human connection around the world focused on empathy, caring, and love. Four years ago a DrSue A. Shook Elementary teacher Ms. Zelene Blancas posted a Tweet of her students that within two days went viral. She posted a video of her first graders leaving the class classroom selecting a fist bump, a high five, or a hug to share with one of their classmates as they filed out of the room for the day. This video received recorecognitionldwide and was featured by national media outlets.
This tweet received the attention of a pink sock member from Pittsburgh, PA I reached out to Ms. Blancasto to send pink socks for her class. In 2019, right before the pandemic, the PinkSocks Tribe began a gifting campaign to deliver 1337 socks to Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary for the largest Pink Socks Life Rally. In November of 2019 Board Members of the Pink Socks Life Organization traveled to El Paso to recognize Ms. Blancas and gift socks to the whole campus. Unfortunately, in 2020, Mrs. Zelene Blancas passed away bringing great sadness to our community.
It has now been three years and the students featured in this video are now 5th graders. As a tribute to Kindness Week, in November we were once again visited by the World Wide Organization to gift socks to all of our 1086 students and staff. We are honored to be able to take part in this great event. This event took place on November 30th and it was featured on KVIA Channel 7.
To read more about this great organization and how they made an impact at Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary, you can read the full story at PinkSocksTribe.
To donate to this great cause, please send any coins or funds to the campus for our campus donation drive.
Weekly Attendance Report
School attendance is critical for all student learning. Anytime a student is absent, they impact their learning and that of their peers. Teachers have to redesign lessons to address the needs of students that we absent. For this reason, our goal is to make sure that all healthy students are attending school every day.
We are proud of most of our grade levels for maintaining or improving their attendance. Shoutout to 5th-grade students for having an almost perfect attendance week as a grade level! Way to go 5th grade.

Consider purchasing Valentine's gram to be delivered to their classroom and help support a great cause!
Let's take action to be happier and kinder TOGETHER
Attendance Reminders
We know our students will become ill throughout the year. For this reason it is important that when our students are healthy, they are attending school everyday. Lost instructional days do not only impact your child's education but also the education and dynamics of all students in the classroom. For this reason, MAKING EVERYDAY Count is critical for the success of your child and all students on campus.
The state of Texas holds administrators and parents accountable for attending school daily. At 5 absences or tardies, you will be asked to have a meeting with administration to make sure we are working together to educate your child. Please help support our teachers by brining in your children ready to learn. We thank you for making attendance a priority.
It is vital to submit a NOTE, from the doctor or a personal note, for EVERY absence to explain why the child missed school.
You can email all Personal and Doctors Notes to: attendancesueshook@sisd.net
Early pick-ups
- Early pick-ups are not processed 30 min before dismissal.

Lunch Charges for students with reduced or pay lunch
Ensuring that students eat everyday is important to our campus and cafeteria servcies. Students that go through the lunch line will always receive a lunch. It is equally important that we:
1. Make sure students have funds in their meal account
2. If you would not like them to not accrue any charges, to understand your requests of not going through the lunch line.
Currently, we have a school balance of $1794.59 dollars. Students with balances can affect their transfer status and items can be held until balance is paid such as final report cards, campus incentives, etc. We ask for your suppor in making sure meal balances are taken care of. Please pay at your earliest convenience using the link provided .
In the event your economic status has changed, you are always able to update your application. Please reach out to our cafeteria services for additonal support.
