ELD Think Tank: One Session ONLY! April 30, 2019
We will learn, grow, and celebrate as a whole department once again on April 30, 2019 at the Hope Online Learning Academy (373 Inverness Parkway). Our ELD Think Tank will begin at 8:30 and end at 3:00.
We will be joined by guest presenter and author of The Imagine Project, Dianne Maroney. We are truly looking forward to learning from her. Our ELPA Excellence Award funds have been leveraged to host this event.
Substitute Teacher Coverage
If you are a secondary teacher, you will need to consider whether or not you require a sub. Consider the following when determining your need:
- If you teach three or more ESL classes as the only teacher of record, you require a full-day or half-day substitute depending on your schedule.
- If you co-teach or push-in all day, you do not require a substitute. If your principal wishes for you to schedule a substitute, your school will pay for the substitute.
- If you teach fewer than three classes as the only teacher of record, you should obtain class coverage. If this is not possible, you should request a half-day or full-day substitute based on your actual need only as absolutely necessary.
- If the above applies, use the code "ELD-ELD Other Training".
Translation and Interpretation Requests: Tips for Success

WIDA Workshops at Summer Summit!
- May 29: Introduction to the WIDA Standards . . . This workshop is designed as a first exploration of the WIDA ELD Standards System. Participants will have a guided tour through each component with practical suggestions for incorporating components into instruction. This workshop is designed to be interactive with ample time for processing and application. This workshop provides foundational awareness of the WIDA Framework and has been designed for any educators that work with English Language Learners.
- May 30: Differentiation for Multilingual Learners . . . English language learners need instruction that is differentiated to meet the needs unique to learning an additional language and grade appropriate content. Participants will approach the idea of differentiation of language from an asset-based perspective, recognizing that language learners bring many contributions to the school community. Participants will collaborate to customize instruction for ELLs utilizing the WIDA ELD framework. While planning, participants will have time to reflect on how to create productive struggle in a safe learning environment.
Please spread the word as these workshops will provide all teachers hours eligible for the 45 hour requirement. Registration for Summer Summit will open on April 1, 2019. Space is limited to 30 participants in each session. We encourage you to attend with your teammates!
These workshops are funded using DCSD's ELPA Excellence Award.
Reminder: 45 Hour CLD Training Pathway
DCSD’s 45 Hour Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education Training pathway has been approved by the CDE. Please see the English Learner Professional Development 45 Hour Requirement guidance document and this site: Relicensure Requirements for all Core Teachers for more information.
Reminder: This requirement applies to educators with elementary, math, science, social studies and/or English language arts endorsements to be completed within their next five-year license renewal period.
For example, teachers holding a professional license that expires in May of 2019 need to meet the requirements by May 2024. (See THIS LINK for more examples of the timeline for meeting this requirement.)
*Please note, it is not your responsibility to coach or advise any teacher about relicensure. Teachers must contact the CDE for this type of advice and support.
