King's Korner
Dr. Joana King, Assistant Superintendent
People often have one of two reactions in the face of a horrific event like the death of Officer Morton and seven months prior, Officer Michael’s death. The first is shock, the second is a rush into activity.
The reason we rush into activity is to escape the numbness of shock and the pain that follows it. If we are busy and doing something, we can can’t feel the full effects of the loss or situation. Yet the pain and confusion over these senseless deaths comes back in waves causing feelings of hopelessness. We begin to question...and we question everything.
Medical science knows a lot more about the effects of trauma on the brain than it ever has. One important point is that post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, affects not just the immediate victims of violence, whether in war or the result of crime, but also bystanders and witnesses and can affect a community when faced with loss.
An event like Clinton has experienced twice in 7 months creates suffering. Suffering can be defined as the pain that makes life seem meaningless. Experts in the area of grief and counseling offer basic remedies for the immediate reaction of shock and the pain that follows:
1) Hold each other through the pain
2) Reach out to loved ones, tell them you love them
3) Don’t take a moment or person for granted
4) Feel your fear, be with it and allow to be released naturally
5) Pray
6) Grieve with others if you can, alone if you must.
We will need to rely on each other in the coming days and months. To heal we will need to come together and support the families of our fallen heroes. We will need to reach out to support the families of the injured heroes. We will need to support and encourage our police and other first responders as well as our neighbors who so deeply feel the loss. Our schools are committed to supporting the healing of our students, teachers and their families.
We are in this together.

"IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL" ARTICLE
What’s Been Going on at Henry Elementary?
Submitted by: Sherri Swope, Henry Elementary Principal
It feels like Spring is finally here and our students are excited to get back outside for recess and learn about Dr. Seuss, plants and weather!
March 2nd was “Read Across America Day” and Henry Elementary celebrated by learning all about Dr. Seuss and integrating his books into reading and writing activities. The school had ten GVMH guest readers that visited on this special day to read Dr. Seuss books to students. Miss Panek’s guest reader even brought hat treats made out of strawberries and banana slices! Some students made green eggs and ham in the Cardi-Cafe, some made hats and others graphed goldfish. Second graders made a T-chart and voted on the question; "Would you like The Cat In The Hat to live at your house?". Students then wrote about their opinion using supporting details.
Upcoming Events
The Clinton School District will have an early dismissal on Thursday, March 15th for Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences. Teachers will be sending home conference sign-up times for parents. After your conference, be sure to stop by the PTO Book Fair Family Night.
Kindergarten Round-Up will be held on, Tuesday, March 20th, from 5:30-6:30 at Henry Elementary. This is an informational meeting for parents of children who will be age 5 on or before July 31, 2018. You will have a chance to tour the facilities, meet the teachers and learn important readiness and enrollment information. Teachers will present information on Kindergarten Screenings and parents will have the opportunity to schedule their appointments for either April 19th or 20th. If you are unable to attend the Round-Up event, please call Henry Elementary at 885-5585 to register for a screening appointment.
Focus on Service Learning
In February, Henry Elementary students shared kindness by delivering surprise notes to teachers and staff members cars' at Clinton Middle School, Central Office and the maintenance department.
Shout-out to Mrs. Potter’s class who participated in the Henry County Big Brothers/Big Sisters Fun Run. Seven students participated! Maybe her class will inspire others to sign up for the Education Foundation 5K on April 7th! What a great way to give back to your community!
