Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 10/17 - 10/21
October is Flying By!
Fundations:
This week we continued our work with the suffixes -es, -s, -ed, -ing, -er, and -est. We are identifying and isolating the BASE WORD in words with suffixes. We are also expanding our work with Vowel Teams. We are working with -oa; -oe; -ow; -ou; -oo; -ue; -ew. Also, we have become experts at the sounds of the -ed suffix...it makes 3 DIFFERENT SOUNDS - -ed; /t/; and /d/!
Literacy:
We became expert "text detectives" this week! We did "close reads" to find text details and highlighted them. This matches our Common Core Standard RL.2.10 - I can closely read complex grade level texts. I can reread a text to find more information or clarify ideas. We put our highlighters to work to find the details in a variety of text passages.
Also this week, we finished our Fiction Unit. We "showed what we know" about reading fiction texts in our three-part assessment given over the past three days. If your Second Grader came home and said that this test was difficult, the rigor factor has been increased this year. I am very proud of your child's stamina, grit, and ability to stay focused on such a long test. Great job, Second Graders! Let's read just for fun this weekend!!
Math: We have begun our second unit this week which is Place Value. We are using Guided Math groups in our classroom now to teach this unit. With this format we are better able to individualize instruction for our students needs. We have three rotations - one is with the teacher; one is an independent/partner activity; and one is the computer station to work on the TenMarks program. We have used base-ten blocks to make numbers up to 1,000, worked on expanded form, and even played a Yahtze-like game for numerals in the hundreds and thousands. These activities match our Common Core Learning Standard 2.NBT.3 - I can read and write numbers up to 1,000 using base-ten numerals; I can read and write numbers using expanded form; I can read and write numbers up to 1,000 using number names. The class is really loving Guided Math model of instruction and I'm already seeing some good growth in our place value knowledge.
Writing Workshop: This week we took our final assessment for narrative writing. Their narratives showed good growth from when they did the pre-assessment way back at the end of August. The class was excited to take their favorite/best story and bring it to publication with covers, dedication pages, and "all about the author" parts. We then shared these books with each other and the students in Ms. Valentour's class.
D.A.R.E.-We had our second D.A.R.E. lesson with Officer Hogan from the Woodridge Police Station today. Ask your child what Officer Hogan taught her/him this week!
Trust Lesson - We had a fun trust lesson this week. It was a "partner" activity and each partner had a turn to be blindfolded while the other classmate "led" h/she to a location in our classroom. It took good communication skills and trust in the partner to stay out of danger and be "delivered" safely!
Anti-Bullying Assembly: On Friday morning we attended an anti-bullying assembly with The Guardian. He taught us how to be heroes and that HERO stands for Help Everyone Respect Others. Our goal now is to be "dream-catchers" NOT "dream-breakers."
Star of the Week...Johanna Adjokatcher!
Sit Anywhere Pass was chosen by Sofia who then chose my seat!
Soleil used her Sit Anywhere Pass to sit with some of her good friends...Miles and Sofia!
Great job, Kevin, on moving to Multiplication and Division on our Reflex Math program!
