Southwest Schools Board of Directors & Superintendent Receive Official Governance Training Approved by the TEA

According to the Texas Charter School Association, "All new members of charter holder and/or charter school governing boards must complete a total of 12 hours of board training provided by a TEA registered trainer within their first year of service. Returning members who have completed the 12 hour training requirement within their first year of service need to complete only six hours of training in their second and subsequent years. The training is broken down into the following seven modules."

By the middle of the day, the board of directors were able to see how quickly accountability module presented could be applied in a realistic scenario that arose for a participant. This governance team was very intentional with the resources made available, questions posed and application of their new-found knowledge.

Utilize Coaching Tools & Processes to Improve Engagements Houston Zoo

The Houston Zoo has engaged in three out of four planned sessions with their leadership team. In this last session held earlier this week, we focused on utilizing the tools and processes learned to improve communication techniques between colleagues, supervisors, etc...

The Planned Engagement Checklist was used in real life scenarios and offered immediate feedback from an audience that played a significant role in the implementation of the project presented. In the end, it was determined that the tools continue to provide ways to appreciate the strengths of many, while offering an opportunity to practice new approaches to a task or conversation.

****Harlingen Young Women's Leadership Conference**** Girl Scout Troop #179

I was invited to be a part of an inaugural leadership conference for girls, ranging from 6-16 years of age. Over the past three years I have discovered that students often could speak on the skill sets they had gained, mostly academic in nature. Some of the statements students listed that they were good at were: "I am good at math. I love science. My strength is reading."

Wanting to have deeper discussion on their qualities and characteristics, which impact the choices or decisions they make, we focused on an exercise that gave the mother-daughter duos a chance to discuss their respective, individual perceived leadership qualities. Many mothers expressed an "A-ha Moment" about their child. A daughter quipped, "We don't think the same about about each other in this area." Consequently, the pairs of mothers and daughters saw an immediate cause to their lack of communication or understanding of their goals, perspectives and the like.
