El Centro hosts Nuestras Raices - May 9th
The Chicanx Latinx Resource Center at UCSC is hosting “Nuestras Raices” (formerly known as Cesar Chavez Convocation) on Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 6-9pm (doors open at 5:30pm) at the C9/JRL Multipurpose Room.
Read on for more information on this annual event and this year's film and panel discussion!
Nuestras Raices honors the work that generations of activists before us have fought for while allowing for the acknowledgment of the work of current and future activists. This new name allows for connections amongst the community, being inclusive of the work and intersectionality of different Latine communities, which creates space for folks to listen, participate, and learn from the experiences of these individuals.
This year we are showing "Water for Life", a 90-minute documentary that documents the work of water protectors Berta Cáceres, an Indigenous Lenca leader in Honduras; Francisco Pineda, a subsistence farmer in El Salvador; and Alberto Curamil, an Indigenous Mapuche leader in Chile. The film “Water For Life” illuminates a growing recognition of Indigenous rights and a rising demand for corporate responsibility and environmental justice that’s being seen around the world. We will be hosting a panel discussion with the film producers after the film.
We invite you and your community to attend this event to learn about indigenous water protectors and engage in critical community conversations, and global activism. Use the RSVP form to register. Other logistics, including parking, are provided on the RSVP form.

Announcing another student research opportunity related to Indigenous health in California! The UCSC Conectados team, under the supervision of Alicia Riley, Assistant Professor of Sociology, is recruiting up to three Indigenous Summer Fellows to join the Conectados team in Summer 2024. The Indigenous Summer Fellows role is a part-time commitment for 8 weeks during Summer 2024 (from late June to early August) in which fellows will contribute to research project planning and implementation and receive mentorship from faculty, graduate students, and community partners. This opportunity is intended for students who identify as Indigenous. The role does not have regular hours, outside of the required ~twice a week team meetings. Almost all meetings will take place virtually through Zoom so the student project assistant does not need to be located in Santa Cruz for the duration of the fellowship. Please visit this website for the full details on the fellowship and to apply. Applications are due by May 13, 2024.
Please reach out to Darío León at dariol@ucsc.edu with any questions about this fellowship.
The UC Undergraduate Experience Survey has opened for enrolled undergraduates and will run throughout spring quarter. The survey helps support departments during academic program reviews, by allowing confidential feedback from students about the quality of instruction, advising, and other aspects of the academic experience. It also provides information about students' experiences with the campus climate and basic needs.
