Reading
We began our nonfiction unit. The main focus this week was that nonfiction books, or informational texts can teach us about many different kinds of topics. We discuss what we already know about the topic before we read and brainstorm questions that we still have about the topic. While reading, we try to answer our questions and notice new information that we did not know before reading. After Thanksgiving Break, we will continue to develop our ability to utilize nonfiction books by better understanding text features such as headings, captions, labels, bold words, table of contents, glossary, and index.
Math
We are making a lot of progress understanding that numbers 11-19 represent a group of ten and ones. This concept of place value will help kindergartners' ability to write numbers without reversals. Many times when first learning these numbers children will write fourteen backward (41). By introducing place value when first teaching these numbers students will have a better understanding of how to write the numbers. Instead of just memorizing what the number looks like, they are able to more consistently and accurately write these numbers. We are even using this in our question of the day. Students understand that 10+5 is the same as 15 because it is a group of ten and five more!
