AVID Schoolwide Progression --Jennifer Donovan, English Teacher
The ninth grade core team is excited to begin implementing AVID strategies in English 9, Humanities, and Biology. As we looked at the transition from intermediate school to high school, as well as moving through high school year-to-year, we found that AVID offered strategies that would benefit students and help them be successful in all classes. We started by looking at writing in the three core content areas and focused on providing common language, note-taking options, and frequent opportunities for low-stakes writing. Regardless of the course or teacher, common language is used to communicate writing expectations. With these common expectations, students know what their writing should look like. In modelling a variety of note-taking options, students have real ownership over their learning in all classes as they are able to organize and process information in a way that makes sense to them. Currently, we are working on some organizational skills for students. We are not only looking at how to organize materials, but also time and self. Our hope is to have this work move from year to year as the current freshman class moves each year.

AVID 10 -- S.M.A.R.T Goals by Anna Seefeldt and Shea Ryan
From the start of the new term, AVID 10 students started creating smart goals to push us through the rest of the semester. A S.M.A.R.T goal is an acronym that stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. According to the Journal of Clinical Psychology, “approximately 54% of people who resolve a change in their ways fail to make the transformation last beyond six months.” A goal isn't always going to be finished, but a S.M.A.R.T goal leads you to success.
As a way to accomplish our goals, we have accountability partners. From the American Society of Training and Development, when you have an accountability partner there is a 95% increase in the chance you will succeed and finish your goal. Also, there is a 65% chance of completing your goal when having an accountability partner. An accountability partner is a physical reminder to keep you active in completing your goals.
AVID 11 Student Spotlights - Olivia Uttech and Miranda Sandholm
In the AVID 11 class, Mrs. Regan has students thinking about getting prepared for college and figuring out what kind of college is a good fit for them. Some AVID juniors were interviewed on their current college thoughts and plans and it is clear they have begun narrowing their choices.
Joshua Raduenz
Josh Raduenz says that he would like to attend a medium to large sized college because he is a social person and likes to be surrounded by people. Some of the colleges that Josh listed as his colleges he is currently interested in are: UW-Whitewater, UW-Madison, and Ohio State University. These are all colleges with some competition, so Josh meets all of the requirements with his current GPA and ACT score. Larger public schools can also cost a lot of money, Josh knows this and plans to apply for scholarships and have a job to help pay for college fees and tuition.
Julia Lyles
Julia Lyles also wants to attend a medium to large sized college because there are more people and more opportunities. Julia plans to go to a two-year college in Florida for business. Julia is going to take a gap year and move to Florida in order to get in-state tuition. She also knows what she needs to do in order to get her GPA and ACT ready to apply for colleges.
Will Smith
Will Smith, the last AVID junior that was interviewed, also knows what he needs to do with his GPA and ACT in order to do what he wants to do. Will wants to major in chemistry at a medium sized college. Will likes the idea of a medium sized college because he wants to be surrounded by people but he also wants to be able to have a 1 on 1 relationship with his teacher. Will likes a college like UW-Whitewater because of the location and the nice campus. He also wants to apply for scholarships to help with college tuition and fees.
