Vose Owl Notes
Family & Community Newsletter - January 2022
Vose Families,
We are excited this week to be back in the building after a week in Temporary Remote Learning. The number of positive student cases is definitely reduced this week compared to two weeks ago, which is definitely a relief. Students are back in classrooms learning and exploring and growing with their teachers and peers!
It still isn’t too late to sign up for the COVID testing through OHSU. Here is the testing program information, OHA consent form, and OHSU consent form. If you don’t want weekly testing, but still sign the OHA consent form, this allows us to do rapid tests at school should your child develop symptoms while here. Your student can bring the signed forms into the front office staff.
We are also excited to be embarking on our One School, One Book reading celebration project. The oldest student and/or only student in a family will receive a free copy of the book "Me, Frida and the Secret of the Peacock Ring" by Angela Cervantes. Then each week between now and Spring Break we will have challenges and activities, all culminating in prizes and fun to support reading and literacy at school and in all of your homes! Please see more info below.
We are also in the process of implementing recently updated Covid-19 quarantine guidelines following CDC recommendations for schools. Mainly the quarantine guidance reduces the length of time from 10 to 5 days, for more info please see below.
As we head into February, we are looking towards celebrating our Character Trait of the month, Kindness, as we also look to honor different cultures and identities through our exploration around the Lunar New Year and Black History Month in many ways throughout our school community. Feel fee to check out the Random Acts of Kindness Calendars for each month linked below (February is featured) as well as resources for learning about Lunar New Year and Black History as a family.
All good things,

COVID-19 Consent Form
As the district prepares to provide additional COVID-19 testing opportunities to students to avoid quarantine or to shorten quarantine after Winter Break, it is important that schools have consent to allow the student to participate in a COVID-19 diagnostic test at school if it is determined through contact tracing they have been exposed to a positive case at school. Parents- please complete the COVID-19 consent form and submit it to the school if you haven't already. A copy, including translated consent forms can be found here under the COVID-19 Testing section.
Student COVID-19 Testing Program Info
Is your student participating in the at-home COVID-19 testing through OHSU and tested positive? With the omicron variant surging, we are seeing more students testing positive for COVID. Those students who test positive should not participate in our program for 90 days after receiving their results, as they will continue to test positive during this time period. These repeat positive tests consume testing supplies and staff time, and distract us from helping students who are healthy or are just being diagnosed with COVID for the first time. Students with a positive result do not need to opt-out of the program, but they do need to pause their participation until the 90-day period has ended.
Student Labels on Testing Kits:
OHSU asked us to again emphasize the importance of correctly labeling specimens for testing kits. Labels must contain both the student’s full name and date of birth in order to be processed by our lab.
This is a program-wide issue- they continue to receive kits that were handwritten with no date of birth provided. These tests were all cancelled and discarded due to not including two unique identifiers. We want to avoid this unfortunate situation in the future and make sure that we can test all specimens that we receive.
Printed labels should be used whenever possible. All participating families should have received barcoded labels from the school with their testing kits. If/when handwritten labels do need to be used, please review the attached instructions again, and note the following.
- Names should be written in the format of ‘Last Name, First Name’ (with no abbreviations or initials)
- Dates of birth should be written in the format of ‘mm/dd/yyyy’
- Providing the school name is helpful, but not required
One Book One School- Let's Read Together
We will work together as a whole Vose community to read and participate in challenges as we read the book to celebrate literacy. Please look for the paperback book in your oldest/only child's backpack and the book will have instructions along with reading assignments...and look for more info about ways to win prizes!

Character Traits of the Month
JANUARY's Character Trait is TEAMWORK. We work collaboratively as a group to achieve the goals we share. We celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday & birthday in January through a variety of learning activities.
FEBRUARY's Character Trait is KINDNESS. We are supporting each other to show kindness. We will be celebrating Black History Month & the Lunar New Year in February.
At Vose, our teachers and staff integrate lessons and activities to emphasize, highlight and teach about each character trait and heritage month. We encourage families to also tell stories and share examples of these character traits and heritage months at home.
Lunar New Year
Tuesday, February 1, 2022 is Lunar New Year, ushering in the year of the Tiger. In addition to mindful planning around religious and cultural observations, we also have an opportunity to learn and teach about the different traditions celebrated in our community.
Traditionally, many Asian countries follow a lunar calendar and celebrate the new year accordingly. In the U.S., the lunar new year is popularly and inaccurately referred to as “Chinese New Year”, even though millions of non-Chinese celebrate it. For example, in Vietnam it is known as Tết.
February is Black History Month

Kelso's Choices - Problem Solving Tool
Kelso's Choices is pretty simple. Kelso is a friendly frog (a puppet) who shares ideas on how he tries to solve problems from 9 peaceful choices. Our School Counselors, Mrs. Moyer and Ms. Phou will be teaching lessons in classrooms in February. Kids as young as preschool (and even those who aren’t strong readers yet) can benefit from learning Kelso’s Choices. The program puts power in kids’ hands to be problem solvers and gives everyone at school a shared language to help kids get along. We hope these posters below (just click on the poster you want to print) help empower your children to solve their problems at home as well! Here is some info for parents as well: https://kelsoschoice.com/free-resources/for-parents/
Please click on the calendar below to be able to view & print the MOST CURRENT district's 2021-22 calendar in English, Spanish and 7 other languages!

Immunization Exclusion Day - February 16
Immunizations are required by state law for children and students in attendance at public and private schools, preschools, child care facilities and Head Start programs in Oregon. Nearly every facility that provides care for a child outside the home requires immunizations or a medical or non-medical exemption to remain enrolled.
Exclusion Day for this school year is Wednesday, February 16, for children who are not up-to-date on their vaccines. Students can see their health care providers, go to a school-based health center or contact the Washington County Health Department to find other vaccination locations.
While recommended, BSD doesn’t require students to be vaccinated for COVID-19. Students won’t be excluded on February 16 if they haven't received a COVID-19 vaccination.
More information, including a full list of required immunizations for the 2022-23 school year, visit the School Nursing and Student Health webpage.
Statewide Assessment for 3rd, 4th & 5th Grades
30-Day Notice and Opt-Out Information for the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS):
In 2010, Oregon adopted enhanced K-12 standards in English Language Arts and Math to ensure all students move from grade to grade with the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. The state tests challenge students to think critically, going beyond multiple choice and asking them to explain their answers. These tests provide a snapshot of your student’s progress and help us identify schools that need additional supports to ensure more students meet the higher standards.
If you do NOT want your student to take the English Language Arts or Math assessment test, please complete the opt-out form here on this page. Please submit this form to your student’s school by February 4 (for students in Grades 3-8). This form is only valid for the 2021-22 school year.
The term “opt-out” refers to the legislatively created process that applies specifically to the ELA and Math state assessments. Parents may opt out of state Math and ELA testing by submitting the state-created opt-out form. For all other state assessments, OAR 581-021-0009: Exemptions allows parents to request that their student be exempted from testing based on disability or religion. Unlike the opt-out process for Math and ELA, parent requests for exemption for all other state tests must:
· Be submitted in writing (there is no standardized form)
· Include the reason for request (disability or religion)
· Propose an alternative learning activity for the student
- A school administrator reviews and approves the exemption request.
HEALTH & FAMILY OPT OUT
Each year all grade levels engage students in health curriculum that spans many levels of learning, from anatomy, disease prevention, healthy habits to stranger danger. Along with our mission to provide vital health instruction, we offer review of the curriculum to our community. Please see the link below to learn how you can check out BSD Health curriculum.
