Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
August 20th-24th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Homeroom (Science): On Wednesday this week we are going to start our first 2 week unit of Science. It will introduce lab safety, how scientists think, and different forms of observation. There will be a quiz on safety tools, process skills, and safety on Tuesday, August 28th. All information on the quiz will come straight from your child's science IAN (Interactive notebook).
- Ms. Uhlenhake/Mrs. Thurston's Math and ELA: This week in math we will start our unit on place value. Students will practice reading numbers and using a place value chart. They will have a quiz on reading numbers on Wednesday, August 29th. In reading, we will launch our Narrative Unit and start our class read aloud, Tiger Rising. In writing, we will start to make our writer's notebooks. These will be covered in pictures and images that will help us think of story ideas that impact us. Please have your child's notebook covered by next week. (Directions will go home later this week).
- Ms. Harris' GT Math and ELA: This week we will start our first unit in math on place value. Students will use a place value chart to understand the relationship between the place and value of a digit. We will also practice reading large numbers. Students will have a reading numbers quiz on Tuesday, August 28th. In ELA, we will take our unit 1 pretest, as well as set up our writing and reading notebooks. For writing this year, we are asking students to cover their writing IAN in pictures, symbols, and quotes that are important to them. These images should bring forth memories to your child and give them plenty of story ideas to write about. Writing IANs should be covered by Monday, August 27th at the latest. This will give me time to cover them with clear contact paper to preserve the images.
