Fifth Grade Field Trip
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our Fifth Grade Field Trip to JA BizTown is quickly approaching. Fifth Grade will be attending our Field Trip to JA BizTown on Tuesday, November 15, 2022. On this day, we will be taking part in JA BizTown where students will be using their knowledge of Economics to run their own businesses.
Students will need to bring a sack lunch and bottled water from home for the trip that day.
We will leave Barry for JA Biztown around 9:00 am and will return to Barry around 1:30 pm. It is important that students be on time to school as we will be boarding buses and ready to depart Barry by 9:00 am.
A permission slip granting permission for your child to attend the trip to JA BizTown was sent home in backpacks on Monday. A link to the form can be found below in case you need a copy.
Please sign the permission slip granting your permission for your child to attend the Field Trip on Tuesday, November 15 to JA BizTown and return the bottom portion to school NO LATER THAN THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2022.
We are looking forward to a great day of learning and putting our learning with Economics and Financial Literacy into action at JA BizTown! Please let us know if you should have any questions.
Sincerely,
Miss Jones and Mrs. Hayes

ELA - Reading & Writing
Reading:
We have been working on skills with recognizing different types of Figurative Language used by authors in text such as similes, metaphors, and idioms. Over the next week we will begin to examine how authors also use personification, hyperbole, alliteration, and adages to help communicate ideas in creative ways when writing. Soon we will learn how to take what we have learned about Figurative Language strategies and use them to help energize our own writing in creative ways in our Narrative Writing piece that we will begin in writing soon. We will assess over recognizing and understanding the meaning of different types of Figurative Language in text early next week.
Students will be expected to read for 30 minutes a day each day of the school week at home as a weekly Homework assignment. Having time to read and practice reading skills both at home and at school can help students continue to grow in their reading this year.
Writing:
We will soon begin the Prewriting process of our next writing piece on Narrative Writing. In this writing piece, students will incorporate story structure to create a mystery story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. They will also have the opportunity to practice using Figurative Language strategies to help readers visualize events in the story.
Math
In math we have finished Topic 3, which was over higher level multiplication. We reviewed from 4th grade and carried on our knowledge into our 5th grade standards. We can solve these problems in many different ways, explain our work, and show our work to our peers. We have started Topic 4 which is now multiplying decimals. We are going to take what we know about multiplication into our new topic. So far we have worked with multiplying decimals by whole numbers using standard algorithms and modeling.
Science
We are finishing up our JA Biztown prep! We are so excited to be going on this field trip. We now have our jobs, and have been meeting with our committees. We are learning what it means to work with committees, building better businesses, and making the most out of our experience.
Social Studies
We have been working on skills with Economic concepts in preparation for our Field Trip next week to the JA BizTown.
After our Field Trip next week, we will soon begin discussing the events and causes of the American Revolution.
I am including some of the other concepts we will be studying in 5th Grade Social Studies as we move through the year below:
