This Week's Theme: PERSUASION
Persuasion is the action of influencing someone to do or believe something.
There are three components of the Model of Persuasion created by Aristotle which is known as the “Rhetorical Triangle”. The rhetorical triangle is typically represented by an equilateral triangle, suggesting that logos, ethos, and pathos should be balanced within a speech.
- Ethos: an appeal to credibility or character
- Pathos: an appeal to emotion
- Logos: an appeal to logic or reason
The following questions will help you recognize and utilize logos, ethos, and pathos.
Ethos:
- What are the speaker’s qualifications?
- How has the speaker connected him/herself to the topic being discussed?
- Are sources credible?
- Are sources documented appropriately?
Pathos:
- Are vivid examples, details and images used to engage the listener’s emotions and imagination?
- Does the speaker appeal to the values and beliefs of the listener by using examples they can relate to or care about?
Logos:
- Is the argument clear and specific?
- Is the argument supported by strong reasons and credible evidence?
- Is the argument logical and arranged in a well-reasoned order?
This week's video shows us how restaurants use food stylists to persuade us to buy their food.
