World Kindness Day...November 13th
VETERAN'S DAY PROGRAM IS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH...RSVP
Dear Parents,
On November 11th, at 9:30am, Shoemaker School is celebrating Veteran’s Day. On this occasion, we are holding our monthly “Mustang Meeting” and having a special ceremony involving many different ways to help us remember and honor those who are serving in the military or who have served in the past. All of the grades have a special part in this ceremony. We realize that the students of Shoemaker School may have some veterans in their families, and we would love for these special family members to come to school that morning. In order to ensure that we have the appropriate space to accommodate our visitors, we ask that you fill out the bottom of this form and return it to school no later than Monday, November 7th. You can also RSVP Mr. Trexler at gtrexler@eastpennsd.org. Please attach or cut and paste the information in the form below in the email. You do nothave to return the form or RSVP if you do not wish to attend the ceremony.
We would, again, like to have a slide show presentation that includes pictures of our Shoemaker veterans. This would include family pictures, old military pictures and anything you can find that represents your soldier. We believe by putting a face to the names shown the Shoemaker family will be able to better recognize the sacrifice these brave soldiers have made.
If you are interested in having your soldier represented in the slide presentation this year, please email Greg Trexler (gtrexler@eastpennsd.org). your interest and your child’s East Penn username. This is a 6-digit number. Once he has received an email from you, he will share the slide presentation. He will send you instructions on how to make you Google slide for your soldier. All you need to do is input the information on the template. He will take care of the rest. Please keep it to one slide per veteran. We love our vets day program, but we would like to keep the program less than 3 hours.
Regards,
Veteran’s Day Committee
50TH DAY SOCK HOP November 14th
50TH DAY SOCK HOP
On Monday, November 14th the first graders will celebrate the 50th Day of School with a 50's Sock Hop. The 1st graders will go back in time and learn about what it was like in the 50’s. At our Sock Hop, we will listen to some of the hit songs from the 50’s and will learn some of the dance moves of the 50's like the twist and jitterbug. To make the day extra fun, we are asking that students come dressed in ‘50’s’ style attire. Be creative. Boys can roll up their jeans to show off their white socks, roll the sleeves of a white t- shirt, wear a jean or leather jacket and slick back their hair. Girls can wear a poodle skirt or long skirt, bobby socks, wear a jean or leather jacket, tie a scarf around their neck and wear a high pony tail. Start thinking about those outfits now. It is a super fun day for the kids! Mark your calendars and don't miss the fifties FUN!
COMMUNITY HELPERS BUILDING PROJECT
The first grades will be constructing a first grade community as part of our Community Helpers Unit. We are asking each child to create a building for our neighborhood. Please help your child create the building listed on the sheet they brought home. Cover empty shoeboxes, cereal boxes, milk cartons, or food containers with construction paper to create your building. Please no larger than 15 X 15 inches please. All buildings are due on or before Monday, November 14th Use your imagination. This activity is a great way to reuse and recycle materials. Thank you and have fun!
GRANDPARENT'S DAY AND THANKSGIVING FEAST
Dear Parents,
On Wednesday, November 23rd at 10:00 a.m., our first grade students will participate in a Thanksgiving Feast. This year, we will combine it with our Grandparent Celebration and invite grandparents to join the students for our feast. We are hoping that more grandparents will be able to join us as they visit for the holidays. We will ask grandparents to adopt a student for the day for those grandparents who can not come. Students will make and dress in headbands and vests or pilgrim hats and sit down together for a feast of fun. We need your help in donating the ingredients for our feast. If you would like to contribute any items for our feast, please sign up on SIGN-UP GENIUS for the things you would be interested in sending. Please plan for a minimum of 50 students and grandparents. Thank you in advance for your donations and help! FYI No lunch will be served that day so this will serve as a snack to hold them over.

LITTLE READER: The Little Reader is in the Blue Shoemaker Folder...please keep the packet and booklet in the blue folder.
Students will have 1 week to complete and practice. Each week practice reading the book each day to build fluency. Complete any skill. Then write 2 to 5 sentences in the packet, draw and color a picture. For added practice have students reread their own writing. Students can write in kidwriting and you write the correct spelling above or below it or students can dictate and you write on a scrap piece for them to copy, or they write on a scrap piece, you correct and they recopy onto the packet.
Lastly, please write the title of the book and due date on the packet. It is due on Wednesdays. Please write me a note or e-mail if you can be our Little Reader Volunteer on Wednesdays. It is best to take the Little Reader out of the folder each week after you get a new book and keep in a folder or box for extra practice.
Sight Word Vocabulary Book: It is the off white booklet. Students have 1 week to practice the words. Students will write words and write a sentence in the book, practice reading the words and return on Fridays. The new list will be highlighted for the next week. You can make flash cards, have students write words or write words in shaving cream for extra practice. They do not need to know how to spell these words...only read them.
Please write me a note or text me if you would like to Volunteer to be the Vocabulary Volunteer on Fridays.
Kicking It Math: Addition flashcards will be sent home soon. Please cut the cards and have students practice learning the facts by heart. A practice packet will be sent home to use...feel free to make copies and practice as they move up the levels. I did not include every level in the packet...just a sampling. We will give Kicking math tests 2 to 3 times per week, as time allows. If students do not pass the level they will retake it. Students can miss 3 of 30 problems. They have 2 minutes to complete 30 problems.
Fluency Passages: Students will bring home Fluency Practice Passages, stories, sentences and poems. Please have students read and reread the passages each week to help develop fluency and expression. Please initial and return each week.
