How to Stop Worrying and Learn to Like (Love?) Networking!
Networking is vital to career and professional growth. Some cringe when they hear the term networking, associating it with awkwardness, a lack of authenticity, and just plain terror.
However, despite its negative connotations, networking is actually about building long-term relationships over time. It involves meeting and getting to know people who you can assist, and who can potentially help you in return. Networking can help you to learn about careers, employers and industries that interest you. It’s also an important part of being an engaged professional in your field, a way to find collaborators for projects that interest you and the best way to keep up with trends and changes in your field.
Here are 3 tips to help you stop worrying and learn to like networking:
- Think of Networking as an opportunity to follow your curiosity! Networking is about initiating interesting conversations with people to help find inspiration and learn new and valuable information. Offering helpful ideas in return is an excellent way to build your reputation as an innovative thinker.
- Networking is a chance to build your communication skills and self-confidence. By putting yourself out there and meeting new people, you are effectively stepping outside your comfort zone and building social skills that you can take with you anywhere.
- Networking is more about giving than getting! It isn’t about reaching out only when you want or need something or seeing how many people you can “connect” with on LinkedIn. When you offer your skills and help to others, you will build a good reputation and people will be more likely to want to help you when you need it.
You don’t have to do this alone. Career Design has resources to help you get started. See our Coaching Resources below for more information.

Insider's Guide to Career Deisgn
What it's like attending the B.L.A.C.K. and L.A.T.I.N.X. Immersion Program
by Kelsey Zapana
For the past few Friday’s I’ve been attending the B.L.A.C.K. and L.A.T.I.N.X. Immersive Professional Series. I was deeply affected by a presentation given by John Armendariz, the Vice Provost of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, called “Cracking the Code” and since then, the reality of going through the job search process as a minority has set in.
Going into the 12:00 Zoom call, I had no idea what to expect. I was accompanied by twelve other Northeastern students ranging from first year to graduate, and we were all there for the same reason: to build our professional network and explore career opportunities.
During the program, we were given a scenario where two African American students and two white students applied for jobs with the same credentials. The first two students had ethnic names and their resumes were enriched with cultural references. The result: they got fewer interviews than the two students who had white-sounding names. I learned that because there is racial bias within the hiring process, minorities' chances of landing an interview (let alone a job) are much lower than their white peers. To level the playing field with white colleagues, many feel they need to "whitewash" their professional identities to increase the likelihood of being seen and to compete for the same positions as whites. Although it’s not the first time I've heard about “whitening” our professional identity, it still shocked me to realize that this is something all minorities have to think about.
Mr. Armendariz closed with a quote from Gregory Kinkaid that I will never forget, "Some people spend their life studying maps but never start the journey; other people blast off the starting line full speed ahead without first charting a course. Most of us could benefit from a better balance between planning and doing." If you are like me and are interested in finding a group of people to share personal experiences with, Career Design offers a wide variety of inclusive programs. I am excited to finish the four weeks in this series, as I can now see the power of meaningful networking and the potential this will bring both personally and professionally.
