TMS Pre-AP Academy
Frequently Asked Questions
Pre-AP® is based on the belief that every student can prepare for higher intellectual engagement by starting the development of skills as early as possible.
What are Pre-AP classes in middle school?
Pre-AP courses are on-grade level academically advanced courses designed to challenge motivated students to understand rigorous content. The coursework requires students to engage in independent and analytical assignments and to complete a substantial amount of work outside of class. TMS offers Pre-AP courses in English Language Arts and Math. Pre-AP middle school courses are designed to prepare students for high school Pre-AP and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. AP courses are college-level courses taught in a high school setting. At the end of each AP course an AP Exam is given. Qualifying scores on the AP exams can enable students to receive college credit and/or advanced standing at a university or college.
Why should a student take Pre-AP classes?
Pre-AP courses
- Cover the breadth of information, skills and assignments found in corresponding high school courses
- Align with the standards and expectations of leading liberal arts and research institutions
- Provide motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to study and learn at a higher level
Most U.S. colleges and many international ones have an AP Credit Policy that allows students who have taken AP courses or exams to earn college credit, placement or both.

What curriculum will the Pre-AP Academy use?
SpringBoard is the College Board's instructional program in English Language Arts and Math. The SpringBoard curriculum is aligned to state standards, and the connections to standards are made clear both to teachers and to students (in student-friendly language), at the beginning of each activity. SpringBoard also aligns to standards that ensure students are career and college ready.
