Reading
We are beginning to introduce guided reading. During this time, students will work on stations while teachers work with small groups to improve their reading skills. Students will rotate through stations: reading to self, listening to stories, writing, and working with the teacher. During this time students have access to RAZ-kids, a program designed to reach students at their independent reading levels. We are continuing to reinforce comprehension strategies through whole group lessons each week.
Math
This week in Math, we were able to take small groups and reteach some of the skills from our first unit on Numbers 0-10. During this time, we looked at areas on the assessment that students struggled with, and pulled groups based on individual student needs. While we were meeting with groups, the other students were completing hands on tasks focused on numbers 0-10. We also used the assessments to identify students that need additional challenges to extend beyond numbers 0-10. We pulled these students and worked to build on their number sense beyond 10.
Writing
In writing, we continued our journal focusing on sentence structure and proper punctuation. We incorporated our sight words for extra practice. The students also got to write in our reading stations. Each class had a different topic to write about, and those topics will be rotating through the classrooms this month. Some of the topics the students are writing about are: fire safety, costumes, Halloween, and community helpers. Students are practicing labeling pictures, generating a list, and composing a story using these topics.

Social Studies
We began our Social Studies Unit on Citizenship this week. We introduced the essential question: What does it mean to be a good citizen? We reviewed our rules in classroom and talked about why we have rules. We also came up with a motion to represent each rule. Then, we talked about laws in our communities. We learned that laws help keep us safe. As a class, we sorted through some good and bad choices and talked about how those choices make us and others feel.
