Book Discard Reminder
Please remember that when discarding books that they must be REMOVED from Destiny, marked with a D or DISCARD and boxed up. Make sure to run a Titlewise analysis of your collection to help determine books that should be weeded.
- **Schools do not need to fill out the FIN-011 form for discarded library books;
- **Schools only need to send Becky an email with the number of boxes to be picked up;
- **Boxes should not weigh over 40 lbs. Copier paper boxes are a perfect size.
- Please do not use toilet tissue/Kleenex boxes, paper towel boxes, computer boxes, etc.
- These boxes pack way too heavy and they are very hard to move.
- **(old) VHS video tapes can be thrown away at the school site. We recommend putting them in a black trash bag.
Books that qualify for discard from your collection include:
- Books that are damaged or have significant wear
- Books that have inaccurate information (mainly non-fiction- ex…Pluto is a planet)
- Books that have Poor or no circulation in several years
- Books that have a very Old copyright (Take into account that many fiction titles will have an older copyright and should NOT be weeded)
It is the understanding in GCS that if these books are not appropriate for the library that they are not appropriate for classrooms or student use as well. Please box them up and contact Becky Kirkman for Pick Up.
Virtual Library Legislative Day (VLLD)
Virtual Library Legislative Day (VLLD) is part of the American Library Association’s (ALA) National Library Legislative Day, held each spring in Washington, D.C. This project will be an opportunity for all library advocates to make their voices heard on a national level
by using the power of the Internet!VLLD is held each spring and library advocates who cannot make it to Capitol Hill for the event can be a part of the effort by calling, emailing, and/or tweeting their elected officials during that period!
VLLD makes Washington advocacy available to anyone, but you and the HPA can bring the inspiration and excitement.

What's going on in the HP Library
Give Five – Read Five Information
A school library media coordinator “expands and enhances the quantity and quality of students’ reading activities” (Standard 4, Element C, Accomplished)
The Give Five, Read Five Program, may support SLMCs as they implement this performance indicator.
We are excited about the many opportunities Give Five – Read Five and the new partnership with myON will bring to students this year. For more information, including resources designed to help schools and partners conduct local Give Five – Read Five initiatives, visit http://www.ncpublicschools.org/give5read5/ . Thank you for your interest in North Carolina’s Give Five – Read Five campaign. Your support will help students across our state return to school this fall better prepared to learn.
