Social Times
Week of March 9-13, 2015
Grades K-2nd
Superflex takes on One-Sided Sid, Unwonderer and the Team of Unthinkables
World Wonderings: Wondering about facts and scientific information. Wondering about how the world works. (How does a train engine work? Why are there different types of clouds?)
Social Wonderings: Wondering about people. When we think about what people in our life are interested in or who they feel about something. (What's Grandma's favorite book? What does your sister like to do in her spare time for fun?)
For Home:
- Help your student come up with World and Social wonders at home.
- Recognize them for doing something that shows they are thinking about others and their feelings and interests.
Next Week
- We are going to interview someone to find out their favorite hobbies, who they live with, what they dream of, etc.
- We will use this information to create a people file.
- People files will help us start to learn about thinking, asking and socially wondering about others.
Un-Wonderer
Superflex takes on One-Sided Sid, Unwonderer and the Team of Unthinkables
One-Sided Sid
One-Sided Sid gets people to only talk about themselves.
4th + 5th
Self-Esteem Skill #3: Dealing with Embarrassment
Yes, we skipped #2, which is Goal Setting. We went in the hall and reviewed our anchor charts and visuals we made in January when we talked about Goal Setting and moved on from there.
The 4th graders were close when creating their video on Dealing with Embarrassment. They had a great plan, but the strategies for the skill aren't quite reflected in the video, so we'll re-create it next week and review the strategies. See the video below.
For Home:
- Share an embarrassing moment with your student. How did you feel? How did you recover? How do you feel when you reflect on it now?
- PLEASE encourage/expect your student to use the visuals at home when completing reading and math activities.
Coming up next week:
- Continue to review Self-Esteem Skill #3: Dealing with Embarrassment
- Continuing to target STAAR reading and math strategies with visuals. Each student will come home Monday with their own copy. Please encourage/expect your student to use the visuals at home when completing reading and math activities.
