what is malaria?
Malaria is a mosquito-borne illness caused by a parasite. People with malaria experience symptoms like high fever, shaking chills, and flu-like illness. Although malaria is a deadly disease, illness and death from malaria can be prevented. Medication for treatment should be initiated as soon as possible, if left untreated they may develop severe complications and die.
In 2013 and estimated 198 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide and 500,000 of those died, mostly children from the African region. Also, about 1,500 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the United States every year. Majority of of these cases are caused by returning travelers.
