UPCOMING DEADLINES
Many seniors are applying to universities with early action deadlines of November 1.
Please stay aware of your deadlines, and if you need letters of recommendation, your facilitators and counselors ask for two weeks lead time to get those done.
If you have any questions, stop by the counseling office.
Application Essays
Writing those college essays is time consuming, and usually what seniors leave until the last minute to complete.
When we ask them if they’ve completed their applications, the answer it typically “well, I’ve done everything but the essay.”
Below is a link to a thoughtful and lighthearted take on parental assistance with essays…enjoy the read!

Paying for College
For seniors planning on entering college in the fall, the FAFSA opened on October 1: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa
This is the first step in determining what financial aid a student might be eligible for, both institutional and federal.
According to this article, last year, over $2 billion in student aid went unclaimed: https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/loans/student-loans/2018-fafsa-pell-grant/
We encourage everyone to complete the FAFSA.

Seniors Named as 2019 Scholars by the College Board's National Hispanic Recognition Program
Thirty-two of Plano ISD's seniors have earned top ranking as Scholars through the College Board's Class of 2019 National Hispanic Scholars Program.
Yearly, the program honors almost 5,000 of the nearly 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Although the program is not a scholarship, it is an academic honor that can be included on college applications. Colleges use the program to identify academically exceptional Hispanic/Latino students.
Congratulations to:

First years had two informative Titan Talks this week. One from sourcing and supply expert, Angela Easterwood on Thursday and one from branding experts Mr. & Mrs. Rose, from Marketing Consulting Group. First years were able to apply what they have learned in their presentations on their Farm to Table project.
Learners continued practicing their marketing skills with logo design in Art & Technology with Mr. McCoy. In Physics with Mr. Hardy, learners have started learning basic trigonometry and vector addition. In math classes with Mr. Stone, learners are continuing their work with linear equations & functions. Ms. Stephens’ World Geography classes are discussing the economic importance and location of resources while in Engineering, with Mr. Hudnall, learners are continuing their work with Mindstorms Robots and implementing the Engineering Design Process. In English with Ms. Wright, learners have begun brainstorming & researching topics for their persuasive essay and pre-writing with word maps and outlines.

The close of another great week at the Academy brings us closer and closer to the Titan Thinker Symposium night on November 13th from 5:30-7:00 PM. The learners are almost finished with the bulk of their research papers, and should be feeling a bit lighter in the coming weeks. Learners spent some time this week setting the stage for Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar this week by discussing aspects and elements of the virtue leadership. These discussions will establish talking points for the text which learners will start next week. In World History, learners have conquered the Early Civilizations and will be moving on to the Classical period, get your togas ready!
Next week is Red Ribbon Week, followed by the Academy’s Homecoming tailgate on Friday, October 26th from 4:30-6:30 PM and the HoCo dance on the following Saturday, October 27th, from 7:30-10:30 PM. Be sure to support the cause and the culture by dressing up for each theme day during Red Ribbon Week. Start off your week right, by wearing your pajamas to school on Monday, October 22nd!
