February 2022

Happy Early Valentine's Day, Stevenson Families!

This February, Team Stevenson wants you to know how much we love working with you, our students, and the community. Here in HISD you have many choices for where to send your student. We are so happy you have entrusted your child's education and development with us. Here at Stevenson we continue to be a top performer among HISD middle schools and are continuing to grow and get better every day. Thank you for being our partner and a part of the Stevenson Dragon Community!

Respectfully,

Christyn McCloskey, Principal

Upcoming Events

Monthly "Do Right Rally" - Friday February 4th

To celebrate all of the students who have been doing the right thing here at Stevenson (no in-school or out-of-school suspensions for the month of January), we are holding our second monthly "Do Right Rally". Participating students will have the option of participating in the following activities during their elective period:

  • Big Gym: Students will play sports (like basketball)
  • Cafeteria: Students will listen to music and play non-electronic games
  • Auditorium: students will watch Encanto!
  • Library: students can relax and read in a peaceful environment

If a student was not able to participate this month due to an in-school or out of school suspension - that's OK! Students will have another opportunity next month to attend the "Do Right Rally" if they do not receive any in-school or out-of-school suspensions.

Keep encouraging your student to do the right thing here at Stevenson!

Guidance from Nurse Belmonte:

Thankfully, the Omicron variant seems to be receding throughout the Houston area and our community. I am hoping to see our attendance rates stabilize and see our students consistently in class learning every day.

However, we need to remain vigilant about keeping ourselves and each other healthy and safe. If your student is experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, please keep them home:

  • Fever
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Congestion/runny nose
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Muscle aches

Prior Updates:

Magnet Updates and Timeline:

The application timeline for School Choice programs is split into three phases. Depending on the phase, different rules apply as to how applications are processed.

Phase 1 (September 10, 2021 - November 18, 2021)
Although anyone may apply during this phase, applications are treated differently for different groups.

  • Any applications for students who live outside the HISD boundaries will not be considered until Phase 3, even if the application was submitted during Phase 1.
  • All applications for students who live inside the HISD boundaries or for the children of active HISD employees who live outside the boundaries will be considered.
  • Any eligible student who meets the qualifications for the program to which they are applying will be entered in a lottery if there are more applicants than available seats. The date of the application does not influence their chances as long as it is within the window.

Phase 2
(November 19, 2021 - March 10, 2022) Deadline for current HISD students to apply for transfers
Although anyone may apply during this phase, applications are treated differently for different groups.

  • Any applications for students who live outside the HISD boundaries will not be considered until Phase 3, even if the application was submitted during Phase 2.
  • All applications for students who live inside the HISD boundaries or for the children of active HISD employees who live outside the boundaries will be considered.
  • After all applications in Phase 1 have been processed, eligible students who meet the qualifications for the program to which they are applying, will be considered in the order in which their application was submitted (online or on paper).

Phase 3
(March 11, 2022 - Onwards) Like Phase 2, but during this time only in-district applicants new to HISD and out-of-district applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis, if space is available.

Parents: We Need Your Help with Social Media!

As you may be aware, a number of spam Instagram accounts have been created in recent weeks. Some are harmless, while others are used to bully and harass students and staff members.

Please help us monitor the situation by monitoring your student's Instagram activity. Most of these accounts ask others to submit photos/posts by direct messaging the owner of the account. You can also check your own student's accounts to ensure they do not have one of these hurtful spam accounts (see images/directions below).

We appreciate your support in keeping our school and the social media space safe for all of our school community!

Report Cards and Progress Reports

Stevenson will begin mailing Progress Reports and Report Cards home to ensure that all parents are receiving notification of their student's progress. We will continue to print and send a physical copy home with students as well. Progress Reports will be sent home tomorrow, December 17th.

Don't forget you can also check your student's grades online any time! Here is the link: https://hisdconnect.houstonisd.org/public/

Attendance - It's Important!

Attendance has BIG implications for Stevenson MS:

  1. Accountability – we want all 7 distinctions AND to be an A! Without high attendance, we won't make our goal earning all 7 distinctions from TEA.
  2. Funding - The amount of funding allotted to educate our children is dependent on our attendance rate each year. Help us get the most amount of resources for your students by attending school every day!
  3. Promotion Standards - students must have no more than 10% of unexcused absences to be promoted to the next grade level.
  4. Most Importantly – student learning! Students can't learn and grow if they aren't in the classroom learning from their teachers and peers.
