Club Spotlight
STEM Gardeners
This year Tichenor Middle School YLD Club participated in the STEM Gardeners club. This new club through the Greater Cincinnati STEM Collaborative is a unique and fun way to learn the STEM of gardening. Through the program curriculum each week youth and staff learned so much! The functions of soil, design challenges, plant hydration, and more.
The youth loved learning about different plants, putting Popsicle sticks in the soil with their plants identifying what they wanted to grow this year. They jumped at the chance to volunteer to water the plants and enjoyed seeing them reach their potential. The youth enjoyed planting, caring, and observing the plants grow from a seed to visibly coming up from the soil. The activities and design challenges kept them thinking and allowed them the opportunity to be creative. Through a mix of both tech-based activities and traditional gardening actives they were challenged to think beyond the everyday. The youth were able to not only relate the STEM concepts to plants of also to areas of their everyday life.
Thanks to Civic Garden Center we were able to receive a tour where we were inspired by their beautiful grounds. We learned about different garden ideas, ways to build our own garden and even how to create our own soil. The youth designed their school garden and were excited about preparing to build the garden beds and transfer their seeds. The plants were growing well and youth were excited to continue to care for their plants. We look forward to getting back in the garden soon!
YLD LOVES NATURE!
Since 2014 YLD clubs have been an Earth-Kids Partner with The Cincinnati Nature Center. This partnership has allowed youth to learn and experience nature all year long! Each year club youth worked with CNC staff to research a conservation based project that they then presented at CNC during their Earth day celebrations. The youth gain knowledge, but also gain confidence by presenting to the public. Club favorites include hiking, making maple syrup and of course Summer Camp! This amazing partnership allows us to celebrate Earth day all year! Check out the video below to see some of our nature adventures.
