Board Reports
Andrew Lie is very grateful to the entire staff for serving this community, a community he is proud to represent. He also praised District staff for their best to provide an exceptional educational experience and help shape our students into whole citizens and productive members of this society.
Kalimah Salahuddin expressed her gratitude to all District staff for returning to school with an extreme amount of effort and dedication, as they always do. She thanked the JUHSD Human Resources Department for their extra efforts to ensure campuses being fully staff, or almost fully staff, at the start of this school year.
Carla Ng-Garrett welcomed everyone back to school. As she finishes her board term this November, she wishes future trustees nothing but the best and hopes her time on the board has made a difference in the community. She looks forward to supporting JUHSD in different capacities post November.
Nick Occhipinti was glad to see everyone back on campus, in person, and finding their place in the community at this stage of the pandemic. He wanted to reassure the district community that schools are still some of the safest places in which to be. He is excited to see the District's Ethnic Studies program roll out into classrooms this school year.
Superintendent Report
*She praised the District's Human Resources Department for their diligence in hiring excellent staff for this school year, including new site administrators.
*During the District's Back to School August 5 event in the new Westmoor High School theatre building, she shared the great input from staff, including their attending sessions from keynote speakers Tovi Scuggs-Hussein and Luis Versalles from Courageous Conversation, and staff presenters during the afternoon professional development breakout sessions.
*She has visited all the school sites and pleased to see everyone off and running with what she thinks will be a banner year! Seeing students visit and bond with each other, which was absent during the past two school years due to the pandemic, has been refreshing to watch.
*She thanked the Board for their continued support, along with the District Office team for their hard work in preparing the District for a smooth return to school.
AFT Local 1481 Report
*This summer, she attended a National AFT convention in Boston, and explained that within this district, all staff are considered to be a union of educators, as we all work together.
*She praised the District's Educational Housing project for serving its purpose in retaining staff, as many staff had expressed their need to move, as they could no longer afford to live in this area. Because of this project, staff were able to stay another with JUHSD.
*CFT (California Federation of Teachers) Officers recently visited JUHSD sites, including Oceana, Westmoor, and the Educational Housing building, with them being quite impressed with all three sites. The Union spent a great deal of time supporting the Educational Housing project.
*She thanked the District maintenance staff for flying the Pride Progress flag at all District sites during the summer months including June, Pride Month.
*Though the District is committed to teaching students core subjects, she stressed the importance of everyone working towards being better humans with each other, even if we don't always agree, let's find the things we do agree on.
