Mrs. Walters' News
Dear Bushnell Elementary Families,
It's hard to believe it's mid January already! I love this stretch of year as it gives teachers and students time to dig in to curriculum with little interruption.
That being said, we've had a lot of children absent from school due to illness and covid-19. I know this has been difficult. Hopefully you received Superintendent Fowler's updated guidance regarding isolation and quarantine. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us and we can work through things together!
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is next Monday. We have a half day of school for students. There is always debate as to whether school should be in session on this national holiday or whether we should have it off. I am thankful we have our students in classrooms because it gives us an opportunity to bring attention to Dr. King and explain the impact he’s had on our nation. Although we still have a long way to go in terms of race relations in our country, I am thankful for the progress we’ve made, which can be attributed to Dr. King’s efforts back in the 1960s. You can be certain on Monday and throughout the remainder of the school year that our students will be learning the importance of Dr. King’s contributions to our country.
Reminder: Monday, January 17th, will be a half day of school for students. Dismissal for students will be at 11:50. While students are at home our staff will be getting some professional development and working collaboratively to better support our students.
Parent/Teacher conferences are right around the corner! Given our current pandemic circumstances, we are planning for virtual or phone conferences only at this time. Mark your calendars for the week of February 7th. We do understand that in person conferences are usually the preferred way to communicate and I am hopeful we will return to that method next school year.
IMPORTANT! We are still looking for a lunchroom para from 11:45-12:30 each day! If you are interested, please give us a call! If you are unable to serve every day, but could sub for us in that capacity we would love to have you!
Next week, an organization called Kids Have Rights (led by the Children's Advocacy Center) will be conducting a virtual presentation for each kindergarten and first grade classroom. A short lesson will be focused on safe adults and body safety. You will be receiving a letter outlining the messaging for your information.
Looking for something fun for your child to get involved in? LASSO Jrs. (for 4-8 year olds) is happy to announce that LASSO will have LASSO Jr’s Trainings at Cherry Creek Elementary on Fridays, February 4, 11, 18, 25, 5:30 – 6:30 pm. For registration, please go to www.lassosoccer.com.
I think that's it! Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Erin Walters
Bushnell Elementary Principal

Second Step at Bushnell!
Along with learning academics, we have been hard at work learning other important skills with Mrs. Hogarth! Much like the specials of art/music/PE, all students at Bushnell have also been learning the art of mindfulness and social skills! Second Step is a researched program that covers Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, and Problem Solving. As "social detectives" we have been learning how to observe facial clues in different settings, talking through feelings and different outcomes we might see at school. Some of our lessons have been whole body listening, following directions, and how to handle accidents/apologies. This classroom is a unique space, with ambient lighting, relaxing background music, soft couches, and sensory equipment including a hammock swing, trampoline and ball seats. We love this time each week! To see the scope and sequence of lessons by grade, visit the following links:
