NEW: Upcoming SAT School Day - Wednesday, March 23
Dear Class of 2023,
As part of a comprehensive strategy to open access and opportunity for all students, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) provides important college readiness examinations to all students. This includes the SAT School Day for Grade 11 students. Not only does this approach allow greater access to this important examination, but it supports efforts to remove barriers associated with college entrance examinations and ensures equitable access to these important steps to college and career readiness.
As a result, MCPS will offer the SAT without essay on March 23, 2022 at no cost to any Grade 11 student.
Students opting to take this assessment during the school day will be automatically registered.
Please visit www.collegeboard.org to access more information about the SAT.
Please visit https://satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/what-to-bring-do/calculator-policy to read about the calculator policy.
Please visit https://www.khanacademy.org/SAT to practice for the SAT.
Please note that students taking the test during the school day must adhere to the same testing protocols that take place on national testing dates, including approval of individualized accommodations and adherence to COVID-19 guidelines.
Please email Ms. Morales at Nyurka_I_Morales@mcpsmd.org
NEW: Therapy Dogs VISIT!

NEW: Things to Know from Friday, February 25
Here are the five things you should know for Friday, Feb. 25. They include an update on mask mandates, quarantine and isolation guidelines, COVID-19 test kit guidance, inclement weather make-up days, and more.
Mask Mandate in MCPS Schools Still in Place
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) voted to rescind its emergency mask mandate on Feb. 22. A joint legislative committee must approve the decision and determine what date the mandate would be lifted statewide. If the committee approves the MSDE decision, local school districts will have the ability to make an independent decision about mask mandates. At the Feb. 24 Board of Education meeting, Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight said that masks are part of a robust COVID-19 mitigation strategy. MCPS will examine local virus data and make a final decision about masks in the coming weeks.
For Athletics
The latest communication for MCPS Athletics, along with the updated Return to R.A.I.S.E. Plan, are available on the COVID-19 Athletics Information webpage.Quarantine and Isolation Guidelines Updated
Beginning March 1, MCPS will be moving from a 10-day isolation and quarantine period for students to a five-day isolation and quarantine, if certain health conditions are met. This aligns with requirements for staff and the recommendations of the CDC, Maryland Department of Health and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
Learn more hereCOVID-19 Test Kits Being Delivered Next Week
MCPS students and staff will continue to receive COVID-19 rapid home nasal test kits. Upcoming distribution of kits is expected during the weeks of Feb. 28 and Mar. 21. Each box contains two tests. Tests should be used in accordance with the information on this website, which includes Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and links to a reporting form. Please note that the rapid test kits should be stored in a dry place between 32 F and 86 F degrees.Inclement Weather Day Make-Up Plan Released
Due to inclement weather systemwide closures and one planned closure on Nov. 24, 2021, MCPS must make up three instructional days to meet Maryland state requirements for this school year. A message explaining the updates to the 2021–2022 school year calendar was emailed to the community on Feb. 24. Read it here.Antiracist Audit Surveys Begin Next Week
All students in Grade 4 through Grade 12 will take an age-appropriate, anonymous survey in school in March. The opt-out period has been extended to 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25.These resources will explain the survey:
The video that all students will see right before they take the survey

NEW: MCPS Community Message from Interim Superintendent McKnight
Dear MCPS Community:
I want to provide you with an update on the school calendar for the remainder of the school year. Recent inclement weather forced Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to close schools for a total of four days during the month of January (January 3, 4, 7, and 20). The 2021–2022 MCPS school calendar was modified in November 2021 to change the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to a system holiday. This left MCPS with 181 planned days of instruction going into January, one more than the minimum required in the state of Maryland. Therefore, one of our four closures does not need to be made up, leaving us three days of instruction that must be added to our calendar.
With this in mind, MCPS would like to announce the 2021–2022 make-up days. MCPS will use the following designated make-up contingency days to ensure we meet the State-required days of instruction.
- Friday, April 1, 2022, originally scheduled as professional day for teachers for grading and reporting, will be an early release day for all students.
- Additionally, the 2021–2022 school year will be extended at least two more days to include:
- Thursday, June 16, 2022
- Friday, June 17, 2022*
*Friday, June 17, 2022, will become a day of instruction and the last day of school, which will be an early release day for students. Innovative schools, that have an instructional calendar of 210 days, will make up April 1, 2022 with all schools, and will end the school year on Monday, June 13, 2022, as scheduled.
Wednesday, June 15, 2022, originally scheduled to be an early release day, will now be a full day of instruction.
On February 1, 2021, the Board of Education approved the Inclement Weather Virtual Learning Plan providing MCPS the option to transition to synchronous virtual learning for any future closings due to inclement weather. Traditional snow days remain valuable and are sometimes necessary. In the unfortunate event we experience inclement weather requiring additional closures beyond this plan, MCPS may request a waiver from the state minimum of 180 school days. To be eligible for a waiver, school systems must demonstrate a good faith effort to make up for lost time using their designated make up days.
While our mission is student learning, our first priority is the safety of our students and staff. MCPS will continue to closely monitor for severe weather and provide updates on any impact it may have on the school calendar. For more information on the MCPS school calendar, visit our website http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org
Sincerely,
Monifa B. McKnight, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent of Schools
