A Message from Mr. Shuckerow
Dear Forest Hills Families,
No matter how prepared we try to be, the beginning of the school year seems to arrive in an instant!
A big thanks to all who helped successfully launch the new school year. To our staff for their thoughtful planning and teamwork, to our PTO for making the staff inservice week well fed and well caffeinated, and to you, our families, for your care and commitment. And, of course, to each and every child. You are why we are here.
My part in this first week was in visiting classrooms to welcome our students through two picture books.
All Are Welcome is a beautiful book that celebrates the diversity of a community much like ours. It shows us the strength found in celebrating our differences and in making our community welcoming to all. The last pages speak directly to us with a message that I hope all of our children feel: You have a place here. You have a space here. You are welcome here.
We Don't Eat Our Classmates follows the first days of school of Penelope Rex, a young T-Rex learning important lessons about friendship. (Don't worry! No fictional students were harmed in the writing or reading of this book.) Her story shows that learning to be an excellent classmates takes our best effort!
I can't wait for week 2!
Mr. Shuckerow
What's New at Forest Hills
The Innovation Lab is up and running! Ms. Jordan, our new iLab teacher, will be introducing the new space to each class this week. After this week, classes will rotate through the lab for engaging and hands-on activities that support problem solving, risk taking, and critical thinking skills.
Counseling has increased! Ms. Drimmel, our school counselor, will now be with us every day to support the social and emotional health of our students.
The physical education program has expanded! Students will now experience 60 additional minutes of PE each week. Ms. McDonald, our PE teacher, will lead students through activities that help develop the skills and habits of a healthy and active lifestyle. These additional PE sessions will take place during one recess per week and each Friday.
Transportation Reminders
School buses are overcrowded and you can help! Many of our students who are riding school buses have not yet registered to ride the bus. This is causing overcrowding and a miscalculation in how many buses are needed. To solve for this, every student who rides the bus must register. Please follow this link to register. Thank you for helping us to ensure that all students ride safely on school buses.
Parking During Drop Off and Pick-Up: Please help us to be good neighbors to the people who live near our schools. Parents should not park in driveways, should not park on lawns, and should not block entrances. Also, please ensure that students respect neighbors’ property while waiting for the bus each morning and that they do not touch or disrupt any items that are on neighbors’ property. Thank you for helping us to be good neighbors.
One Way Traffic for Arrival and Dismissal (Repeat)
Drop Off and Pick-Up Options (Repeat)
Option 1: Drop off your child from your car on Sunningdale Rd. Car drop off is located on the west side of the building along the primary playground area. Supervision will begin at 8:05. School doors open at 8:10. Please note that Sunningdale is a one way road during the arrival and dismissal windows.
Option 2: Park and walk your child to the front of the building. Street parking is available along Andrews or along side streets. We ask that all students be escorted when crossing a street and recommend that younger and new students be escorted to the front entrance.
Option 3: Have your child ride the bus. See Forest Hills Bus Routes for specific bus stop locations and times. Students need to be registered for transportation: Transportation Registration Form
PICK UP OPTIONS
Option 1: Pick up your child with your car on Sunningdale Rd. Car pick up starts at 2:50pm to allow busses time to board and depart. Once busses depart, cars can pull forward and students will be escorted to their cars. Note: For safety reasons, we do not allow car pick up in the front of the building along Andrews Rd.
Option 2: Meet your child (walking) at the front of the building. Students will congregate near the front main entrance. Students are not allowed on the playground during the dismissal window. This allows front office staff to ensure all students have been safely dismissed.
Option 3: Have your child ride the bus.
NEW Visitor Management System (Repeat)
All schools will begin utilizing a new visitor management system. This system will enhance school safety by screening and registering visitors. During the first weeks of school, please take a moment to register with the front office using your driver's license or passport. Your patience is greatly appreciated in this first stage of implementation.
After registering, visitors will receive a printed visitor badge with each visit. Badges will include name, photo, and destination of visitors, allowing staff to better support a safe school environment.
More information can be found in the links below: LOSD Smore Announcement (July 3, 2019) and the LOSD website.

Online Student Information Verification (Repeat)
Beginning July 29, parents of all students already enrolled for the 2019-20 school year can log into ParentVUE and review/update student information through the Online Registration tab. Accurate information allows the school communicate effectively, including during an emergency and when responding to medical situations.
If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Create New Account or Reset Password" and choose "Forgot Password". (The district will mail another Activation Key letter to parents who have not created a ParentVUE login and have an elementary school student.) For guidance, visit the LOSD website (under Enrolling and Transfer > Online Registration) or contact your student's school during its summer office hours. We appreciate your help!
