The Pershing Elementary Newsletter

Principal Message

Good Evening Pershing Families,

Progress Notices

As we enter the last week of January, Progress Notices will be posted through the San Juan Portal for parent and student viewing by tomorrow evening, Monday, January 25th. Please remember that any student with a grade of a 1 or a 2 (Below or Approaching Standards) will receive a Progress Notice. During Distance Learning, I am finding we have many more Progress Notices than is typical. We have six more weeks before the end of the trimester, which provides a solid amount of time to focus in on key areas where more attention may be needed, or to ask for assistance from your child's teacher. If you have questions about your child's Progress Notice, please contact your child's teacher.

Student Routines and Structure: The Keys to Success!

One common thread that I have heard, both as an educational leader and as a parent myself, is that students need that sense of routine and structure each day to be more successful in their school work. Please encourage your child to treat each school day as much as possible like a normal school day by expecting the following:

1. Wake-up early enough to have breakfast before classes begin online.

2. Dress for success! Encourage your child to wear typical and comfortable clothes as if they were going to school in person.

3. Have your child ready to learn with his or her device (Chromebook) and materials at a table, kitchen counter or desk (not in bed!).

4. Encourage your child to have his or her camera on as much as they can to show the teacher their understanding. Although having cameras on is not a requirement, teachers can only respond to student understanding if they have communication (messages in chat about the lesson, or verbal and/or visual responses).

When we do have the opportunity to return to in-person learning, having followed these daily recommendations will also make the transition back to school in-person so much smoother. If you need other supports or suggestions, please visit:

iReady Assessments

Many classes continue their iReady assessments this week through the first week of February 12th. Students will be assigned and asked by their teacher to complete the iReady Reading and Math Diagnostic Assessments. Teachers use these assessments to determine student's instructional growth and current need. Teachers have asked me to emphasize to parents to please not help your child on the questions on these assessments. When parents help on the questions, it invalidates the results.

What can I do to help?

To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to:

  • Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.

  • Try their best on each question and try not to rush.

  • Work for 20 minutes and take a break.

  • Take your time

  • Try not to worry about questions they do not know—remind them that it is expected they will get only about half of the questions correct.

  • Use paper and pencil to show work for math questions.

If you have questions about the iReady Diagnostic, please reach out to your child's teacher.

If you have other questions, please call us at 916-979-8076 or email me at kendra.shelton@sanjuan.edu.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kendra Shelton

Principal, Pershing
