PGHS Back to School Edition - August 19, 2022
Welcome to Pottsgrove High School
Dear PGHS families,
It is very exciting to welcome everyone to the 2022-2023 school year. As the first day approaches, I expect that everyone is looking forward to the excitement the new school year will bring. High schools are tasked to help and support our young adults find their passion, and are responsible for providing students with an exceptional education that will prepare them for a successful future. At PGHS, our goal is to create an educational environment with a high level of personalization in every aspect of a student’s high school experience. This includes a commitment to the development of character, pursuit of academic rigor, and high expectations for involvement throughout the school community.
Please take a few moments to review the contents of this newsletter, there is a great deal of information that is crucial to a successful start to the new school year.
Enjoy the remaining days of summer, cherish the moments with family and friends, and get ready for a great year.
On behalf of all the staff at PGHS, I extend best wishes for a successful 2022-2023 school year, and we’ll see you on August 24h!
Parents and students...please be sure to take time to refer to the student handbook for guidance on all PGHS rules and expectations. You can find the link to the online handbook here: Student Handbook
The PowerSchool portal opened on the afternoon of Monday, August 15 so students could view their schedules. If you have not visited the portal, please take some time to review and complete the "First Day Packet". Please note the information below related to schedule changes. All requests should be made through guidance.
Adjustments to student schedules should be addressed prior to the start of the academic year if possible. Student schedules may only be changed for reliable academic reasons. Unfortunately, modifications to accommodate lunch/classes with friends or to change teachers will not be honored. Schedule changes after the first 10 days of school will not be permitted unless approved by the principal. Due to enrollment and program constraints, some sections are closed to additional students and the flexibility in changing schedules is limited.
PGHS Guidance Counselors
PGHS Students are assigned to guidance counselors based on last name. Please see the alphabetic breakdown to find which counselor to contact for your student, should you need to do so.

Main entrance lobby
Athletic/Gym/Fitness Center entrance
Students will be held in the locations above until 7:23. First period starts at 7:30, we expect all students to be in classrooms and ready to learn at this time. This year, we need to do a better job getting to first period on time. Student drivers need to plan accordingly so you arrive on campus with plenty of time to get to the appropriate classroom by 7:30. This will be something we will be giving significant attention too as we start the school year. Please review pages 11 and 12 in the student handbook for information pertaining to tardiness.
Class period and dismissal times can be found on the bell schedule below.
Attendance Notes and Reminders
Pottsgrove School District accepts the use of electronic excuse notes. To excuse your student via email, please send a note along with the date, name of your child, grade, and reason for the absence to HSAbsent@pgsd.org within 3 school days of the absence.
Note: emails sent to teachers email address will not be accepted as an excuse note. As a courtesy, teachers may forward the email one time to the appropriate attendance email.
Please take time to review the information pertaining to attendance on pages 10 and 11 of the student handbook.
Lunch should be an enjoyable experience for all students. Everyone is expected to regard the PGHS cafeteria as their dining room and behave accordingly. Please review the guidelines and expectations on page 13 of our handbook. Please visit the Food Services page on our website for menu and payment information. https://www.pgsd.org/domain/62
Please note, no outside food is permitted to be ordered and delivered to the high school. This includes services such as DoorDash and UberEats. Please make sure that students are aware of this policy.
At PGHS, Breakfast will be served each morning until 7:26. There will be no breakfast service after 7:26 so students are not late to their first period classes. (Please note, there will be no breakfast service on the first day of school, August 24.)
Lunch period are scheduled for each student and listed on student schedules. Students are required to report to the cafeteria for their scheduled lunch period.
Also of note, at the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) does not have the authority to extend the COVID-19 pandemic relief waivers which permitted all students to eat breakfast and lunch for free. The USDA is scheduled to have the breakfast and lunch programs revert back to their pre-pandemic operations.
Lunches and breakfasts will no longer be free for all students starting in the 2022-2023 school year. To be eligible for free/reduced meals for the 2022-2023 school year, families must complete a free/reduced lunch application when they are released over the summertime. Alternately, families may apply for free/reduced meals at www.pgsd.org/Page/10005.
We are all very excited and looking forward to continuing our school wide laptop initiative. This year we have new devices for every student and we have started the distribution this week. The next opportunity will be Monday, August 22 from 1:00 – 2:30 in the PGHS Cafeteria. We will have a plan in place during the first few days of school for students that did not get their new device prior to the start of the school year. Reminder to students in grades 10-12, you will need to exchange your old devices and equipment for the new devices and equipment.
Use of Personal Electronics
Personal electronic devices represent a great benefit to the daily lives of our students (i.e., communication, organization, research). At the same time, these devices also have significant potential as a distraction from learning, specifically, in the classroom setting. Our goal, as a school, is to teach the responsible use of technology to our students; a skillset that will serve them both as students at PGHS, and beyond. If a teacher has not given specific permission for personal device use, devices must remain put-away. In these days before the start of the new school year, please engage your student in some conversation at home about appropriate use and the need to refrain from personal device usage that detracts from teaching and learning in our classrooms.
You MUST log on to the following webpage, and select your own appointment time!!!!!!

Every car on campus, excluding visitors, will have an assigned space. This is critical to the safety and security of our campus. We have a limited number of student spaces and are giving Seniors the first chance to obtain a space. After Monday, August 22, any remaining student parking spaces will be made available to Juniors.
