FBMS - Staying Connected & Engaged April 1, 2020
Earth Day Focus by Mr. Casavant, Grade 6 Social Studies and Green Team Advisor
April 22 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, and never has Earth Day been so important. The planet is getting warmer, thanks to increased carbon dioxide levels in the air, largely the product of burning oil, gas, and coal. Every year that we don’t take serious action, the situation becomes more urgent. We need to change.
Earlier in the school year, I asked students to join my Green Team so that we could raise awareness in and around FBMS. The first Green Team meeting had a strong turnout, and even more were expected for the second, until we all had to go home and keep our distance.
But that’s OK. We can still make a difference from home. To help get climate change under control, we’ll need to reduce the use of fossil fuels. That means more public transportation, eating less meat (animal agriculture is devastating to the health of the environment), reducing waste. And since most of us don’t have an array of solar panels on our roofs, we can at least be sensible about how we use -- and not abuse -- electricity around our homes.
I’m encouraging you all to post a FligGrid video. Follow these steps:
1. Go to FlipGrid.com
2. Scroll down a bit
3. Click on “Enter a Flip Code”
4. Type casavant5445.
5. Select Login With Google
6. Type your school email address
Post a video of yourself explaining what you do, or will try to do, to minimize your carbon footprint (see my own photo below). In other words, how can you use less fuel in your daily life, whether by reducing electricity or heat, traveling less by automobile, or through your eating habits. Your video will help to give others good ideas that perhaps we all can incorporate into our lives.
You can even go a step further if you’d like. If your parents are OK with it, email me pictures of yourself holding a message about the importance of protecting Earth (see the example above with my daughters!). Or doing something “green.” My email address is ccasavant@mpsd.org. I will post them on my Twitter account each Friday, and then on Earth Day, using these hashtags: #FridaysForFuture, #EarthDay2020, and #ProudToBeFBMS. This can really help to generate interest and awareness about this important issue.
I look forward to your responses and support!
