At Haskin, we are "Learning Today, Shaping Tomorrow!"
HAPPY FEBRUARY!
While we are in the middle of milder winter weather, I know that I enjoy “snuggling up” with a magazine or a good book. Reading does many things: takes us away to different places, lets people learn new information, makes us feel different emotions, and the list is endless! Finding time to read together with your child gives you an opportunity to share these experiences which will encourage a love of learning and reading.
Reading aloud to your child is the most important way to encourage a love of reading in your child. Set aside some time everyday and read with your child. WE HAVE AN EXCITING FAMILY ACTIVITY PLANNED that will provide you the opportunity to do this! Be looking for information to come home regarding this TOP SECRET, FUN-FILLED activity.
Has your child ever read a page, gotten to the bottom and said: “I don’t have the foggiest idea of what I read!”? Here are some do's and don’ts that will help your child understand and retain what is read:
Before Your Child Starts Reading:
- Scan the story together for difficult words and review meanings of these words.
- Discuss the general theme of the story.
- Look at the pictures and make predictions about the story.
- Have your child relate the story to his/her experiences. Is it like anything he/she has done or seen?
- Don’t always read school materials. Find a variety of materials to read.
- Don’t make your child “spell out” words he/she doesn’t know. Try blending the sounds together.
While Your Child is Reading:
- Suggest reading silently, before reading aloud.
- Take turns reading with your child.
- Determine the setting of the story - the time and place. If it’s a real place, help locate it on a map.
- Let your child know any unknown words.
- Predict the outcome. (“What do you think will happen next?”)
- Don’t pressure your child into reading for you. Reading should be a pleasurable experience.
- Don’t interrupt often or your child will lose track of the story.
- Don’t correct every miscue- unless not doing so would affect the meaning of the story.
After Your Child Has Finished Reading:
- Discuss the main ideas. (What was the author trying to get across?)
- Identify the facts. (who, what, when, where, why, how)
- Sequence the events of the story. (What happened first, etc??)
- Ask: “Did any part of the story confuse you?”
- Don’t ask all of the questions. Let your child come up with his/her own questions and answers about what he/she read.
- Don’t rush answers. Give your child time to think.
- Don’t ever continue if you feel tense or upset. Stop for a while or find someone else your child can read to.
I hope these suggestions help to make reading with your child a fun and relaxing experience, while sneaking in some opportunities to boost reading skills!

HASKIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY
Monday, January 15, 2018, was the day to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and all he did to help unite our country. Students learned how some children were not allowed to go to the same school, drink from the same drinking fountains, or even be friends with other children because of skin color. The students were shocked that people could actually treat each other this way. They are proud of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the hard work he did leading marches and protests to bring attention to these unfair laws. They learned of his famous “I have a dream…” speech and thought of different dreams they each have to make the world a better place.
To commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, each student at Haskin chose a dream they had for either our nation, world, or environment and wrote it on a paper hand. Using these hands, we created a beautiful way to celebrate this extraordinary man.

Health Tips From The School Nurse
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
· Fever or feeling feverish/chills (not everyone with flu will have fever)
· Cough
· Sore throat
· Runny or stuffy nose
· Muscle or body aches
· Headaches
· Fatigue (tiredness)
· Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
Protect yourself and your children with a flu shot. Contact your physician, health department, or clinics for an appointment.
Guidelines to follow when ill with the flu:
· Stay home when sick. Students should be kept home if they have a fever of > 100 degrees F along with a cough and/or sore throat. Students should stay home for at least 24-hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.
· Follow basic health hygiene practices to limit the spread of illness, like the 3 Cs (Clean, cover, and contain.)
Clean—wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs.
Cover—your cough or sneeze with your elbow or sleeve.
Contain—students should stay home if they’re sick.
· We also ask that when you call your students in sick, please indicate if they have a fever of > 100 along with a cough, sore throat, or any other similar symptoms they might be experiencing.
We at Sandwich School District #430 are working hard to promote a safe and healthy learning environment. We understand that children can’t learn if they are sick.

Kindergarten Science and Writing Winter Fun
What do you get when you mix baby oil, paint, water, glitter, and Alka Seltzer tablets in a jar? The kindergarteners were able to find that out as a Science center during STEM time. It makes a cool snowstorm in a jar!
During writing time, the kindergarteners listened to a story book about a family living in a snow globe. They wrote about their five senses pretending to live in a snow globe. After writing what they would hear, see, feel, taste, and touch in a snow globe, they made an art picture of a snow globe with themselves living inside it!
The students in Kindergarten have been working very hard at developing their writing skills. This is a picture of the students engaging in “Snowball Writing”. “Snowball Writing” is where the students write down a word told to them by the teacher and crumple up the paper like they are making a snowball. The students then throw it across the room to a friend. This process continues until all the boxes on their paper are full. The students love practicing their new skill in this fun manner!
All About the Weather
The Hunt for the Comma Culprit
The second graders have been working on Grammar skills each week. Recently, they hunted for where commas should be in sentences, added them, then lifted the flap on the clue card to find the clue letter and number. Using the letter and number, they were successful to crack the case of the Comma Culprit. Great job, second grade detectives!!
Does the Water Absorb or Bead?
Third graders at Haskin are learning about water. The students did an experiment to see if water would be absorbed or bead on waxed paper, aluminum foil, white paper, and paper towels.
Sharing Christmas Spirit
Students in Mrs. Dougherty’s third grade class at Haskin received a visit from Ms. Greenacre, the principal, who shared Jan Brett’s The Animal’s Santa.
