Social Studies Weekly
Year 5 Volume 13~ December 4, 2017
This week's shout out goes to Eleanor Pilson. She did some great review work with her students in World History. Check out the pictures below.
Benchmarks Extended Through Thursday
The issue with Benchmark testing was a statewide Schoolnet problem. At least that is my understanding. I know this was not the best time for a technological glitch. Please discuss any concerns you have regarding testing with your Testing Coordinator.
FYI:
When grading the Benchmark Constructed Responses, please do not score students' tests if they have not taken the Benchmark. Leave these CRs ungraded. If you know of any other opportunities, please let Melissa know and she will add them to the spreadsheet.
Please be on the look out for an upcoming PD session on how to apply for these opportunities.
World History
Brr... it is cold outside. And, it is not just the weather. Welcome to the Cold War and Decolonization. Check out the inquiry based projects for both.
The Unit 9 M/C Bank questions are in the PSL library. Hopefully this week, you will see the addition of Unit 10.
Civics and Economics
This week will be finishing up Trade! For those of you looking for additional resources of PFL, try NEFE. They will supply you will free materials. It is a great supplement to use with EVERFI. Remember, no program or booklet can take the place of you!
You may also want to use the inquiry based project on decisions regarding college or the breakout box on identity theft.
The Unit 6 M/C Bank of questions is in the PSL Library. Hopefully this week, you will see the addition of the Unit 7 Trade questions.
American 1
We have reached the last unit: A House Divided. There are a few inquiry based projects available for this unit. This one deals with the start of the war. You may also want to try using this set of hexagons to have the students make connections with the early material in the unit and follow up the hexagon activity with this bracketology.
American 2
There are a ton of primary sources to look at for this unit. To help not be overwhelmed, HERB has some great sources all in one location.
Message from Melissa
With regards to the benchmarks, please keep in mind that the benchmark is a formative assessment that replicates what to expect on the NC Finals. When examining your scores, look at the average for the type of class you are teaching. This is a much better comparison than looking at county averages.
The questions were developed with an understanding of the verbs used in the objectives and the concepts behind the objectives. If you have any concerns about specific questions, please let me know.
Have a great week!
