Summary

Furnace Penitentiary is the world’s most secure prison for young offenders, buried a mile beneath the earth’s surface. Framed for the murder of his best friend, Alex Sawyer is sentenced to life in prison. He knows that he has two choices: find a way out, or live out the rest of his life behind bars. Except in Furnace, death is the least of your worries. Soon Alex discovers that Furnace is like no other, where creatures in gas masks (wheezers) stalk the corridors at night, where giant men in black suits drag inmates away from there cells never to be seen again, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the hidden tunnels below. And the man running the show is the all-powerful warden, a man as cruel and dangerous as the devil himself.
Together with a few inmates—some innocent kids who have been framed, others cold-blooded killers—Alex plans an escape. Now its all about the execution.

Characters

Alex Sawyer- Was a bully and a burglar, stealing from kids and houses with his best friend Toby. In one of their heists they are ambushed by Blacksuits who killed Toby and framed Alex. He is put in Furnace and roomed with James Donovan who he soon becomes close friends with. While living in Furnace he witnesses the mysterious experiments the Warden does to the boys to turn them into horrific beasts. He must come up with a plan to save himself and his friends.

Donovan- He is Alex's very strong and well-built cellmate in Furnace. Since he is so strong, he can often do what he wants without having anyone to get in his way. He was sent to Furnace after killing his mothers abusive boyfriend.

Conflict/Resolution

Alex is stuck in Furnace Penitentiary for life, but he must escape. With the help of some other inmates they form a plan. While doing their daily routines they gather supplies to escape. A particular closed off room is there way out, by filling rubber gloves with explosive gas and inserting them in a small crack in the floor leading out to a river. With a certain amount of time and opportunity they must get it right the first time, their only chance.
