The district and the City of Durham have created summer work-based learning opportunities for our students. Also, employers across the triangle will be interviewing graduating seniors virtually on May 5th from 2-4pm. Students can visit the Career Center for more information.
ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES
UNC Chapel Hill's Emergency Department: is offering a weeklong experience that will allow students to participate in lectures, procedure labs, simulation, and clinical experiences that introduce them to the specialty of Emergency Medicine, its unique scope of practice, a combination of professions, and varied patient population.

Program Details
Who: Senior high school students and Freshman and Sophomore undergraduate students (students must be 18 year old or older at the time of the program)
When: June 21-25, typically within the hours of 8 AM to noon
Where: UNC Medical Center and virtual experiences (dependent on COVID-19 pandemic)
Cost: no cost to the student for the course, but housing and transportation will not be provided -
Application: Statement of interest (no more than 250 words) and a letter of recommendation
Deadline: April 16, 2021
Participants will be notified by the end of April of acceptance
The Dr. Levi Watskins, Jr. Institute and Scholarship Fund was established to provide scholarships for outstanding high school graduates and enrolled students who meet the criteria for admission and choose a career in medicine or dentistry. Funds from this scholarship will support students enrolled in the Meharry Medical College - Tennessee State University Medical/Dental Accelerated Pathway Program. All colleges/universities require students and families to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for financial aid. The priority deadline is March 1st. For help completing FAFSA or confirmation that you've completed FAFSA, reach out to Ms. Tran (919-391-6441 or sally_tran@dpsnc.net) or Ms. Villegas (919-525-1165 or cvillegas@emilyk.org).
Recent high school graduates in Durham County can receive up to $1,000 each year for two years at Durham Technical Community College. To be eligible, students must enroll in at least six credit hours in a semester immediately after high school. Disbursements are made in $500 payments per semester. (Learn more here.)
High School Navigator: High School Navigator is a one-stop search tool for finding pre-college summer programs or internships or volunteer opportunities for high school students. HS Navigator will help you to filter your search experience based on your diverse subject interest, location, preferred university, program duration, budget, and more. National Association of Black Accountants: The National Association of Black Accountants is hosting a residency program for 20 minority students who are interested in learning more about accounting at one UNCC campus from June 13-18. Students will be exposed to corporate industries in Charlotte and learn more about accounting, college, business etiquette, professional development, and financial literacy from faculty at UNCC as well as professionals from different organizations. MARINE MAMMAL SUMMER VIRTUAL CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
A generous donor has provided scholarships for up to ten high school students to participate in a virtual marine sciences summer camp this summer. The camp is called the “Marine Mammal Online Experience,” run by the California Ocean Alliance. The experience is described here: https://www.caoceanalliance.org/marine-mammal-online-experience-moe. There are two sessions:
1.) July 5-9 9:00am - 12 noon PST
2.) July 19-23 9:00am - 12 noon PST
Please consider your students, giving consideration to those who would most benefit and might have limited opportunity to otherwise join a program like this to explore their interest in marine science. Science department chairs and teachers should contact Linda Tugurian ASAP with a student name and contact information (email and phone) so we can put these scholarships to good use!

- North Carolina A&T University is starting a new scholarship program called Aggie Commitment Trailblazers (ACT). The scholarships are open to Associate in Science or Associate in Engineering students planning to major in a STEM discipline at NC A&T and attending one of NC A&T’s partner colleges like Durham Tech. The scholarship covers full in-state tuition and fees.
- Five Durham Tech honors students have been invited to present their research at UNC-Greensboro's Undergraduate Honors Program Symposium
- Two Durham Tech students received the SURE Fellowship Award to conduct undergraduate research with UNC School of Medicine this summer.
C3 Drop-In Hours
NC State's C3, the guaranteed admissions pathway to NC State, is offering drop-in hours to answer student questions. The application deadline is rolling until June 1.

Just wanted to share some really exciting news for this week. Our school district has partnered with Oppti (www.getoppti.com) which is an online platform where high school students can find volunteer opportunities and internships specifically sourced for them. We know it is incredibly tough finding opportunities, but we hope that with this new resource, it makes the searching process so much easier. You can easily create an account at https://getoppti.com/login using your personal email address and type in Northern High School. This free, co-ed camp is for rising 9th, 10th and 11th graders. Registration is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Session I: June 14-18, 2021 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday) Session II: June 21-25, 2021 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday) Main Campus, Newton (Building 4), room 4-149 By filling out this form we know that you are interested in the construction camp and that you are able to attend for the entire week of programming. Durham Tech COVID procedures will be in effect for these sessions. Participants must wear a mask at all times. Participants should not attend this event if ill or recently exposed to an individual/s with COVID symptoms.

If you are interested in transferring to UNC Chapel Hill, the Carolina Student Excellence Transfer Program (C-STEP) may help you get there. Application to the program is competitive and is based on both academic excellence and financial need.
You are a good candidate for C-STEP if you can answer YES to all of these questions:
◻ I will graduate from high school this June.
◻ I will enroll in a Durham Tech Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree program in the fall.
◻ I have earned fewer than 30 transferable hours of college credit.
◻ I have a high school and/or college GPA of 3.2 or higher with challenging classes.
◻ UNC offers the major I want.
◻ I have completed or am eligible to complete FAFSA and have some financial need.
◻ I have the ability to attend Durham Tech full time (12 or more credit hours in fall and spring.).
There are two application deadlines, October 1 and April 1. Here are the materials all applicants must submit:

◻ High school transcripts
You will be asked to upload your high school transcripts in the application. This required for international students as well. Graduates of a NC high school can request transcripts through CFNC: https://cfnc.org.
◻ For dual enrolled students, unofficial transcripts from Durham Tech and any other college you may have attended
You will also upload these transcripts to the application. You can download an unofficial copy of your Durham Tech transcripts on Self-Service under Academics.
◻ TWO letters of recommendation
