Pratt's Primary Corner
Weekly Update- August 24, 2018
Week at a Glance
Math- Unit 1 from Bridges is a review of 2nd grade skills. So far we've focused on addition and subtraction strategies. We learned a fun new game called Make a Sum!
Writing- We are starting the year off by writing personal narratives. So far we've talked about how writers don't start a story by writing, they begin by just telling the story and sketching a quick picture. We've also talked about how we can add details to our story to tell it bit-by-bit.
Science/Social Studies- While it's not in our learning standards, we started the year off by learning about the brain. We've discussed how our brain can change and grow as we learn new things. Through learning about the brain we've realized that mistakes help our brain grow and failure can help us succeed.
Homework- The Name Jar
For homework this week I wanted to do an activity that would help build our classroom culture.
This week, your child will need to conduct an interview with you about his/her name. After interviewing you and researching the meaning of their name, they will write a paragraph about their name on a name jar sheet. They can decorate this sheet when they are finished, as it will go into a class book of names! Everything needed for this assignment has been sent home with your child.
This will be due on Friday, August 31st.
Click here to see the assignment. It is also in your child's red homework folder.
Head Room Parent
These are due by Friday, August 31st. Here is a digital copy for you convenience.
MAP Testing
The best way to prepare is for your child to get a good sleep the night before and eat breakfast.
Captain Fluffy Winkle Sign Up
Message from Mrs. Callahan:
The Captain is ready to come visit kiddos on the weekends! Below you will see the info and the link to sign-up. Please let me know if you have any questions.
I know the kids are all excited to be able to take our Guinea pig home for a weekend so I have created a sign-up for easy scheduling! Here are a few things to keep in mind before signing up:
1. Please only sign-up for 1 slot until everyone has had a chance that would like a chance
2. He will need to be picked up after school on Friday (between 3:45-4:15). You are welcome to return him before or after school after the weekend.
3. I will clean his cage every Thursday or Friday morning so you will have a clean guinea pig cage.
4. I will send all needed supplies home in a bag along with instructions.
5. He only needs to be fed once in the morning so he is low maintenance.
6. Please pay attention to slots that are over a long weekend or over a break.
Remember, no pressure to be the Captain's weekend home! Thank you and let me know if you have any questions!!!
