Message from the PTO President
This week, you are receiving the PTO Newsletter a day early due to some timely events and changes that would come too late if you received them tomorrow - [plus tomorrow is an 11:30 a.m. dismissal]!
By now, your children have come home with a flyer about a brand new fundraiser called "Let Them Eat Cake!" This wonderful idea came from Jill Fahey & Renee Richardson, both 4th grade(+) parents, and Mrs. Fonzi and Mrs. O'Neal were thrilled to have their 4th grade classes be a part of it. This is meant to be a FUNdraiser for the kids, so please send in your raffle ticket purchases before May 15th so that your child will have a chance to win a cake on May 19th. See below for more information.
Since last week's newsletter, we have had a few candidates throw their hat in the ring for open board positions. THANK YOU!! There is always room for more, so please reach out to me right away if you're interested! We intend to hold the PTO Board elections on May 18th before Arts Night begins. I promise that being on the board is FUN and not too much work!
It has been a great year and I really appreciate all of the support and volunteer hours committed by our families. But…there is still ONE MORE EVENT to step up and help with!!! This is especially perfect for those families who are going to owe $$ for unfulfilled volunteer hours, so please read below about our upcoming Hot Dog Bash scheduled for June 8th, and email our HDB Chairperson, Gail Mattoon, to volunteer.

Over 50 cakes to be raffled off on Tuesday, May 19th.
Student will have an opportunity to walk through Burke Hall to view all of the cakes and drop their tickets in for a chance to win one of their favorites.
All winners will be announced/all cakes will go home the same day.

Our Spring Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education contest is on!
Turn in your BTFE and LFE Coupons by Monday, June 1!
The class with the most (highest per student average) BTFE and LFE labels will win a classroom pizza party, cupcake party, extra recess or other - the choice is yours and your teacher's!
Attach Box Tops and Labels for Education coupons to the appropriate flyer sheets (download link below) or submit them in plastic bags marked with your child's and teacher's names. Please try to trim your labels as closely to the coupon outline as possible. Only unexpired labels and box tops for education coupons will be counted toward the contest.
Completed flyers and bags can be dropped off in the classroom, the front office and to Cristina Farias-Gomez or Mickey Grammatica Fletcher.
Cub Scout Pack 194 Tiger Rally Friday
Cub Scout Pack 194 is having a Tiger Rally this Friday from 6:45 pm - 7:15 pm in the STM cafeteria. Families that will have boys in grades 1-5 this fall are invited to learn more about Cub Scouts. Ask your kindergarten boys about our classroom visits last week. They were very excited to learn more! Write to STMpack194@yahoo.com if you would like to attend, or if you'd like more info.
STM Focus Groups - Letter from Mrs. McCormack
Last Fall, we asked for your help by completing a survey in support of the upcoming Design for Excellence (DFE) that will be conducted in the 2015-2016 school year. The DFE is a recertification process that is both an assessment of the current school curriculum, programs and staff and an assessment of plans to grow and improve our school.
Response to the survey was very positive with 184 or over 66% of school families responding with many providing additional comments. Thank you.
Based on the survey responses and comments, we are scheduling grade level group meetings, really Focus Groups, to gain more information and insights to help St. Thomas More Cathedral School grow and meet the needs of our students now and into the future. The groups will be facilitated and scheduled by grade groupings in an effort to gain the most insight from parents with students in these grades. Only Parents and the Focus Group facilitators will be in attendance.
Meetings will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Lee Hall (School Gym)
· Tuesday, May 12 – Grades 5,6,7 and 8
· Wednesday, May 20 – Grades 2,3 and 4
· Tuesday, May 26 – Pre-K, Kindergarten and Grade 1
If you are unable to attend your child’s grade group meeting, you may attend another session. However, please note that the focus of the meeting will be the grades listed on the date scheduled.
In the Fall, we will share the focus group feedback and action plans with parents

Open PTO Board Positions for Next Year
We are nearing the end of the terms for three current PTO board officers. The following positions will need to be filled for next year:
- Vice President
Here are the position descriptions of the PTO board officers for your reference (from the STM PTO bylaws):
Section 1. The President shall preside at the meetings of this Organization and of it’s PTO Board, appoint the chairperson of committees with the approval of the PTO Board, sign orders on the Treasurer for the payment of bills, and perform such other duties as are incumbent of the office. The President ex officio is a member of all committees except for the Nominating Committee.
Section 2. The Vice-President, in the absence of the President, shall perform all the duties of the President and such other duties as are assigned to the office.
Section 3. The Secretary shall keep the minutes all Organization meetings and meetings of the PTO Board; shall keep a list of all members of the Organization; shall notify members of their appointment on committees; and discharge such duties as are incumbent upon this office.
Section 4. The Treasurer shall receive all dues and other monies of the Organization; shall keep an accurate account of same; and shall pay bills upon the written order of the President, or as directed by the President with the approval of the majority of the PTO Board. In performance of these duties, the Treasurer shall comply with current Church directives regarding the receipt, accounting and disbursing of monies, and the controls applied thereto, as provided by the rector, or his designee.
Section 5. The At-Large Officers of the PTO Board shall participate as voting members thereof, shall serve as spokespersons for the general PTO membership and perform other duties and functions as necessary to facilitate the operation of the PTO Board and the goals of the Organization as a whole.
Hammer Kicks Youth Sports Camp
The STM PTO is excited to announce that Adrian Ordenes (2nd Grade Parent), and STM Alum, Hamilton Bittrick will be offering a multi-sport camp this summer! Even more exciting is that they are donating 50% of the proceeds earned from STM Student enrollments to the PTO! Keep reading for more information about Hammerkicks Sports Camp.
It’s not too late to enroll your athlete in camp this summer!
Hammer Kicks at Gravely Point Park has open slots every week from June 1 – August 28, 2015.
Kids ages 5 - 12 are invited to show off their skills, compete, and stay active all summer! We focus on having fun, sportsmanship, and character building through competition. Soccer, football (no-contact), baseball, and other sports will all be part of a detailed agenda.
Discounted STM rates:
Mon - Fri, 9am - 3pm, Lunch and plenty of water will be provided daily.
$190 weekly rate 6/1 – 8/28.
Mon - Fri, 9am - 6pm, Lunch and plenty of water will be provided daily.
$275 weekly rate 6/1 – 8/28.
50% of all STM enrollment proceeds will be donated to STM.
Drop off any time after 9am!! Sibling discounts offered!!

Please Log Your Volunteer Hours!
Thank you to the countless families who have stepped up to volunteer at the school this year. We really appreciate you!
If you have put in hours of service to date, please be sure to log them via the web site in a timely manner. If you have any questions about how many hours you have remaining currently, please email Nicole Mayer at email@example.com. All families who have not met the minimum requirement were sent a balance notice. If you have not fulfilled your requirement, you will be billed at the end of the school year. 20 hours or $300 is the commitment.
Ways to Earn Volunteer Hours
- Friday Pizza Lunch - assist with pizza lunch or the Market Table (the kids are thrilled to see you there!)
- Hot Dog Bash (Monday, June 8th from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.) See flyer included in newsletter.
- Goods & Monetary Contribution - contributions to PTO events are valued at $15/service hour
